Trollbeads Inspiration – Christmas Town Charm Bracelet

Over the Christmas holidays I published an article showcasing a Nightmare Before Christmas themed bracelet. I mentioned at the time that I was pondering a Christmas Town bracelet and today’s Trollbeads blog article brings a little inspiration for the wintery month of January.

In the period between Christmas and New Year I tried to feature a couple of non-festive articles for those feeling a little overwhelmed with the red and green colours that dominate Christmas bracelets. During this schedule I reviewed the limited edition Trollbeads Green & Purple Armadillo glass bead, featuring a Nightmare Before Christmas bracelet. I loved the combination but I’m ultimately bias as it’s my favourite movie of all time.

A the time I did ponder making a Christmas Town bracelet as a contrast to the spooky themes of Nightmare Before Christmas but I ran out of time before the holidays began. I did wonder if I’d missed the opportunity for this given Christmas is over. Instead I decided to attempt the bracelet with a more wintery colour scheme appropriate for January. To add a bit more interest, I attempted a complementary gradient manicure. I love dressing my nails to match my bracelets and it’s something I’ve lacked time for over the past year. I’ve made a hesitant new year’s resolution to try and find more time for this in 2014.

Christmas Town

As mentioned I wanted to avoid any traditionally festive colours, specifically reds and greens. I searched for some movie stills for colour inspiration and what follows is the result.

While Christmas Town itself features a lot of typically festive shades, the setting has a beautiful blue-violet aura that’s perfect for a winter theme. It’s this I attempted to capture in the following bracelet. Notable inclusions are the Trollbeads Milky Quartz, always my choice for imitating snow, Blizzard and some pale blue glass. The silver beads are an absolute mix with Trollbeads, Ohm Beads, Redbalifrog and Pandora all represented.

The ombre nails were created using a gradient effect technique. The specific shades shown here are the Chanel Coco Blue from their limited edition blue jeans collection and O.P.I’s Planks a Lot. As a general rule, I’d advise using shades that don’t require multiple coats as building this effect is rather time consuming. A top coat of O.P.I’s Pirouette My Whistle was used for the snowflake effect. Apologies for the slightly untidy nails. They needed a tad more tidying around the cuticle to remove excess polish but I was also wary of photographing as soon as possible as they tend to chip fast when I ride daily!

Christmas Town Summary

I do keep pondering whether a splash of lilac may have benefited this bracelet but I love the white and blue colour scheme. It’s perfect for this time of year and obviously the silver beads can be changed to suit your own collection.

As always I love to hear from my readers. What are your thoughts on this Christmas Town charm bracelet? Have your bracelets received a revamp after the festivities have ended? Hit the comments and let me know!

Oooo…I love that bracelet! You’ve inspired me to make a white/blue bracelet for today. We are stuck inside as it’s -22C. I might get my Pandora snowman charm out again!

    • endangeredtrolls

Oh the Pandora Snowman nearly made it onto this bracelet. Honestly I had a lot of silver beads I wanted to feature on it (too many) but found the pale blue glass tricky. I’m so pleased that you liked it though.

I’ve been reading the news regarding the awful temperatures in the USA at the moment. What a horrid winter it’s been for everyone. The UK is still being battered by storms and is so badly flooded. Northern Europe has suffered two hurricanes and now the poor USA is like an ice cube 🙁

It sounds a good time for bead play over there! 🙁

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

      • Farah

Yeah and the strangest thing about this all is that Belgium barely had had winter, yesterday it was 13 degrees Celsius here!

A lot of good luck and warmth for thos bearing the cold!!!

Victoria: gorgeous bracelet! Now i’ve started trollbeads, I find it quite hard to combine the different brands together…

        • endangeredtrolls

Denmark has had those two awful hurricanes but in terms of the actual temperatures, mother nature is being kind. It’s 8 degrees here tonight – crazy for a January night! We’re having a lot of rain this week and the forecast for the weekend is to dip below zero but I’m feeling so fortunate.

I really hope we manage to get through this winter with no more horrific weather. I have so many temporary repairs to my roof that I need spring to come early! 😉

I do mix brands.. but you’ll notice mainly I mix Redbalifrog silvers with Trollbeads or Ohm Beads glass with Trollbeads. It’s not a rule but it’s what I find easiest to work with I must admit!

  2. Tracey

    This is gorgeous!

I am so glad that you featured another Christmas themed bracelet, and that manicure is to die for. 🙂
I am wearing my Christmas bracelet today. I was going to change it but decided that I’d wear it one more time before a change to a wintery theme.

Two of the glass really stand out in today’s blog; Cool Dusk and the Blue Moonstone. They are lovely here!

I’ve been trying to get Winter’s Kiss but it has been sold out EVERYWHERE and they are on back order.

Old man Winter is really giving it his all this year… 🙁

    • endangeredtrolls

Winter’s Kiss was super popular I think 🙁 I actually have a review ready for it. I wore it on my bangle for Christmas and it received quite a bit of attention then.

I actually had a bit of a problem finding really pale blue glass for this. I’d love another pale blue armadillo but alas, never seen one!

Cool Dusk brings a bit of sparkle to it though. It reminds me of sunshine on ice during the winter <3

So glad you liked the nails too 😀

  3. rainey

No! No color! Your bracelet is the very essence of cold and equally beautiful. It’s just perfect as it is.

LOVE the nails too. I really love reading about and seeing some of the insanely elaborate nails some professional manicurists are doing. But, let’s face it, who wants to be wearing 2 pounds of objects on their nails and who wants to be touched by some of those spikey creations?! Yours are the perfect combination of visual sizzle, practical wearability and perfect taste.

How did you build the ombre effect? The sparkly top coat adds the perfect wintry accent.

Beautifully done nails. Beautiful bracelet. Spectacular combination!

    • endangeredtrolls

I’m so glad you like the nails! My nails are a practical length at the moment. I ride my pony everyday and I clean stables and keep the house – I can’t have stupidly long nails so these are something I consider sensible 😉

The ombre effect nails is actually ludicrously simple and requires different shades of varnish (as many as you want to use), a piece of plastic (I use plastic sleeves for paper documents – the type punched with holes for lever arch files – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Strong-Plastic-Pockets-Sleeves-Opening/dp/B00AQZYMVW) but things like food bags will do, a wooden tooth pick or kebab stick and a piece of sponge. I cut standard kitchen cleaning sponges into strips.

You paint the nail colours in stripes on the plastic – directly next to each other. Using the toothpick, blend the edge between the two colours to create an overlap in the shades – nothing fancy, just wiggle it along the line between them so it blends a little. Dip the sponge into the varnish and then press it straight onto the nail. You’ll get excess varnish around your fingers but you can avoid that by putting masking tape around the skin – or just clean up afterwards with varnish remover.

I’d generally recommend using a base coat of one of the colours on the nail first. This is purely to stop the need to do the sponge effect multiple times as it gets quite tedious. The end result is a textured looking nail due to the sponge but a clear top coat (or something sparkly like I used here makes it go away.)

I’m planning another set during the next week so I’ll snap some step by step images for you 🙂

      /hugs

      • Mars

Love your nails and yes please to a nail tutorial!

        Mars xx

        • endangeredtrolls

Will do. This one is super easy – doesn’t matter if you have wobbly hands etc (like me! :D) The hardest part is cleaning up afterwards 😀

          /hugs

          • Mars

I don’t wear make up so nails is one area (along with jewellery obviously) that I like to dress up with so love seeing nail art/skills. Adore the colours you’ve used too, also looks like our nails are a similar length as I have mine as long as it practically possible 😉

            Mars xx

          • endangeredtrolls

I love dressing nails to match bracelets. I’ve been dabbling with nail art since I was quite young and I’ve always had great fun with it. My intention last year was to feature more nails to match bracelets but it never really turned out as planned. Hopefully this year I’ll manage it 😉

I’m lucky with my nails – they’re incredibly strong and grow very quickly. I’m forever filing the damn things down. They were longer last year but now I’m riding everyday, they dig into my own palms if I keep them too long 😉 The frustrating thing for me is that with such an active lifestyle, they chip fast 🙁 I did that manicure on Friday and it just about made it through the weekend, by yesterday it was chipped and by today I have that terribly unattractive mostly gone look 😉

I don’t have a particularly steady hand so I find a lot of the intricate freehand skills difficult. Ombre looks are very easy to do though and look rather impressive at the end. I do admit to have an air brush too which is great for stencil work but it’s quite tedious for the sake of it last 2 days!

            /hugs

      • rainey

I see. You’ve made your own transfers. Clever girl!

They’re lovely and I find that length much more practical too. I don’t ride but I sew and if you can’t pick up a coin or a sewing needle how helpful is it that they’re long and, otherwise, pretty?

Anyway, glad to see that you’re making the most of January. With such pretty fingers who could stay blue for long?

  4. Melanie

Another stunning bracelet. It glistens and shimmers with cold! What a contrast to the deep, rich colours of the nightmare before christmas bracelet. I love how you dig at the roots of the theme, get right into the heart of it and produce something that shows such a strength of feeling and empathy for the subject. Brilliant!
I’m not a big fan of the general colour blue although there are a few shades I do like. Consequently, although there are three or four blue beads on my wish list (one of which happens to be cool dusk), I don’t have a single blue bead in my possession! I am hooked on purples though, and have managed to get my hands on a purple and green armadillo from Germany which is on its way to me! I do adore that bead and your nightmare before christmas bracelet sold it to me! I’m after the amethyst next which I’m hoping to get for my birthday in a couple of weeks!

  5. Serena

    Dear Victoria,

I’m new and I fell in love with Trollbeads last June, when my child has born and I received a bracelet with Maternity and the Blue prism.

In the meanwhile, my collection is grown up and I am waiting to get some sparkle beads from new Spring collection.

Like you, I really love (pale) blue/purple/white shades and the above bracelet is really beautiful!

I have to ask you an advice: what is your opinion about the Faceted Calcedony? I’d like to get it but I cannot choose between this and the Milky Quarz.

Thanks and have a nice evening,

    Serena

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Serena,

So welcome to the crazy world of Trollbeads 😉

The Faceted Chalcedony versus the Milky Quartz – that’s a tough choice! The Milky Quartz is what’s used in this bracelet and it’s a matte effect white bead – very good at representing snow on a bracelet. If you hold it next to the Chalcedony, the blue in the Chalcedony is noticeable. To me the Chalcedony looks a little bit more like a frozen puddle where the Quartz looks like snow.

Personally – I prefer the Milky Quartz! This is purely because there isn’t a lot of choice for matte white beads and I really like the contrast between blues and whites. The Chalcedony can also be a little different in colour between each bead where as ALL of the Milky Quartz beads are just white 😉

  6. Faye

A real beauty, Victoria! Brilliant! That periwinkle blue armadillo & pandora star go so perfectly with blue dusk & the blue moonstone!!!

    Love your manicure, wow!

I think you have just enough purply color with the periwinkle cast of the light blue beads. It looks very frozen…..

    • endangeredtrolls

I actually managed to incorporate a Pandora glass bead! I was so impressed with myself! 😉

Judging by the feedback from you lovely ladies, it seems the choice to stick to the blues and whites was the best option.

Ironically (though it wasn’t intended) this bracelet feels rather apt for many of my US readers right now 🙁

  7. Fran B.

    Victoria,
you reallly know how to surprise me!
I frowned when I saw your email on TB Xmas Town… Semi-Vivit imagination;-) but this… this what you did…

    Stun-ning!!!!!!!!!

I hope you all in North US are still doing fine with that terrible cold!!! Thinking of you,
    Love Fran

    • endangeredtrolls

I’m so pleased that so many of you like it 🙂 I love dressing nails to match bracelets and it’s something I promised I would do more of last year. But then my horse got sick, my dog got sick, my dad got sick, my rabbit got sick and everything just went wrong! 🙁 This year I’m determined to feature more nails to match bracelets 😉

I just hope my readers in the USA receive some warmer weather soon and stay inside and play with their beads 🙁

As I keep saying – HORRIBLE JANUARY!!

      xxx

  8. Cheryl

    Victoria!!

Simply awesome bracelet! I’m a blue person so it suits me perfectly.

As I was looking over this bracelet, I was wondering where some of the beads came from. Was happy to see the legend of each bead. Thank you very much! If I can locate the beads, I’ll put one together.

And love your manicure! It goes perfectly with the bracelet

Deep freeze here in United States, Northern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. All schools are closed and it’s bitter with the wind chills. Everyone stay safe.

    • endangeredtrolls

      Thank you so much 🙂

I’m feeling so sorry for my lovely readers in the USA. I always have a quick flick on the news first thing in the morning and the weather there has been a prominent feature 🙁 This time last year we were suffering temperatures of -30 degrees C and I now how utterly horrible it is! Just being outside for a few moments becomes very uncomfortable 🙁

It’s a perfect time for staying inside for some bead play I think so please stay safe and warm

      xxx

  9. Faye

Victoria, You really inspired me with this one… I stopped at Pandora on my way home from work ( bundled up! ) and bought the periwinkle stars murano. I got home, we had baked macaroni & cheese dinner, and I settled in for some bead play. Luckily, I had ordered Winter’s Kiss.

On my version, I threw in TB Ice Bear, and substituted TB Ice Blue Diamond for your gorgeous armadillo unique – which I didn’t have 🙁 I used a Blizzard for the second Milky Quartz ( I only have one). What fun! This one just may displace my Sci-Fi bracelet I’ve been wearing!

    • endangeredtrolls

Oh I’m so pleased I inspired some bead play! 🙂 The weather here is vile today. It’s not cold but it’s very very wet and windy and just icky. I got drenched earlier doing the pony and now I have to go out in it again 🙁

I’ve been looking for a twin for that little armadillo for years and I’ve never found one :< I have to admit though.. your macaroni and cheese sounds soo appealing right now! 🙁 /hugs

      • Faye

With the dogs going out in the freezing cold a lot, and having to clean up after the animals outside, we are burning up the calories.

Tonight’s biscuits & gravy – southern style, garnished with flat parsley. I use two chopped veggie burgers in the gravy instead of sausage.

I took the TB’s ice blue diamond out of my bracelet, it wasn’t purply blue enough. Still a work-in-progress! But my sisters and I DID order new sparkly “Cosmic” nail enamels in colors like “Moonlight”, “Aurora”, “Radiance”, and “Celestial”. Can’t wait to get them and try those out.

        • endangeredtrolls

It’s nearly 11pm here. I’ve just tucked my pony up for the night and am debating bed and now I’m hungry Faye!! 😛

I understand what you mean about the Ice Blue Diamond. It’s very blue isn’t it? It’s beautiful but it’s not very subtle for these kind of bracelets I feel.

Those nail varnishes sound lovely! I must admit I treated myself to four new colours at the weekend with a voucher I’d been given for Christmas. I’m planning a manicure to match the Trollbeads Be My Valentine but the beads haven’t arrived yet and if I do it too early, they’ll chip before I can photograph!

          /hugs

  10. Debbie

Perfection 🙂 bracelet and nails in perfect harmony, love it!

    /hugs
