Trollbeads Halloween 2012 a Spooctacular Collection Review

Today’s Trollbeads blog article offers an in depth review of the new Trollbeads Halloween 2012 collection; a spooktacular release for the holidays!

Last week saw Trollbeads debut their Halloween collection for 2012. It sees distinctly “troll-esque” feeling designs but the highlight was undoubtedly the new glass offering, Inner Glow. Trollbeads have always been at the forefront of glass bead design and with Inner Glow they continue this trend.

On Monday this collection dropped through my mail box as a gift from the wonderful people at Trollbeads Boutique.

Trollbeads Blog – Halloween 2012 – Overview

The Trollbeads Halloween 2012 collection is relatively small and certainly by Trollbeads usual standards. It consists of just three beads; two silver and one glass. Nestled between the fall and winter collections however, many fans will undoubtedly be relieved at it’s more succinct size. All rumours suggest that the Trollbeads Christmas 2012 collection is going to be very large so it’s unsurprising that many are trying to gather funds in anticipation.

Despite it’s small size, the glass is arguably an item most collectors will purchase in multiples. It’s the first of it’s kind when it comes to the large bead brands and while some may argue that it’s gimmicky, others are going to adore this bead. In addition many aim for symmetry when creating bracelets and due to the nature of Inner Glow, it’s at it’s best in multiples.

Trollbeads Blog – Inner Glow

While I’ll openly state that I adore this entire release, the highlight is the new glass bead. Inner Glow is created from glow in the dark glass that’s incredibly difficult to work with. By day this innocent looking bead is clear glass with very pale green or mint coloured speckles nestled inside. As the light falls, the bead radiates from a quite subtle glow to a vivid green.

While I describe the bead as “innocent looking”, on closer inspection it’s actually a phenomenally interesting bead. It looks like a very viscous gel with small flecks contained within. Even by day it’s incredibly appropriate for Halloween, boasting a certain oozy or gooey quality to it.

If I had to be critical of this bead, it’s worth pointing out that out of the four of these beads I now have, all have slightly loose cores. This has never been an issue that has particularly bothered me but I am aware that it irritates some collectors. There is a little size variation between the beads I have but this is quite minor by comparison with other glass beads I own in multiples.

I’ll admit this bead has become somewhat my personal nemesis. Don’t get me wrong, I love it but photographing it to capture the glow is a nightmare. As such, I’d like to apologise for the following images. They’re a handful of the literally hundreds of images I took in an attempt to do this bead justice.

It’s worth noting that this bead doesn’t work to extremes. That is to say, it’s not either vivid green or totally dull, it has it’s own spectrum of variation. It starts to glow softly as soon as the light begins to fade. This is so subtle it’s more of a hum and hopefully the image below captures this.

Inner Glow uses a phosphorescence method of glowing. This means it will charge under direct light and emit a glow that slowly fades over time. When fully charged, the amount of light it emits is quite dazzling and these beads are sure to generate a lot of interest after dark.

Trollbeads Blog – Halloween 2012 – The Spider

The spider is going to be a love or loathe bead purely based on personal feelings in regard to it’s subject matter. It’s quite a realistic looking bead so those with any degree of arachnophobia are probably going to want to skip this.

The design of this bead is quirky and very typical of Trollbeads older work. It’s worth noting that due to the bead’s design, more of the weight is contained in the body of the spider. As such, this bead does spin around when used on a bracelet. Personally, I don’t see this as a “fault”. Spiders are known for the way they spin when climbing and to me it adds a real charm to the design (apologies for the pun.)

For those who love the design but would be annoyed by the spinning issue, the spider works beautifully on a fantasy necklace.

Trollbeads Blog – Halloween 2012 – The Pumpkin

The pumpkin is so iconic of Halloween that any holiday bracelet needs one. Trollbeads version features a both a bat shaped mouth and similar engraving on the back of the bead.

For reference, this bead is hollow so the mouth is actually a hole directly through to the core area. The shape on the back, by contrast, is an engraving.

There has been much comparison between the new Trollbeads Pumpkin and the Redbalifrog Jack O’ Lantern. While there are similarities, I think any brand would be hard pressed to create a revolutionary pumpkin bead. Rather than discuss the specifics of the two beads here, I’ll offer a comparison of the two beads in a later article.

Trollbeads Blog – Halloween 2012 – Ordering Details

For those who haven’t yet ordered their Trollbeads Halloween 2012 beads, I’m thoroughly recommending Trollbeads Goldmine Boutique. Clicking on the link below will open the landing page for the Halloween collection in a new window:-

They have a range of offers available at the moment ranging from a $5 discount on one Halloween bead to a $25 voucher (usable immediately) on all three of the beads. They’re also offering a free bracelet and clasp with purchases over $75. While they’re located in the USA, global delivery is now available and even European customers may find savings on this collection.

Trollbeads Blog – Halloween 2012 – Conclusion

I simply love this collection. I’m a huge Halloween fan and undoubtedly my favourite time of year is the period extending from just before Halloween to Christmas. Like many I’ve always longed for Trollbeads Halloween release but primarily due to it’s lack of popularity in Denmark, the brand have never particularly dabbled in this area. Indeed the last time they flirted with a Halloween release, the spectacular Trollbeads limited edition skeleton necklace was the result.

Naturally the use of these beads outside of the holiday season can be questioned but I think even accounting for this, it’s hard for any Halloween fan to resist this quirky collection of beads. I’ll also admit to hoping that this isn’t the last we see of the glow in the dark glass concept.

I do have one grumble regarding this collection though it’s more specifically related to the distribution. Upon the release, I went into my local city in search of the beads. None of the retailers in my area had received their deliveries with one store stating they didn’t expect them for another eight days. While normally I tend to blame local stores for failing to keep up with new releases, this issue also affected Perlen who are always timely in acquiring new products. I was fortunate to be offered the collection from Trollbeads Boutique and given their speedy shipping, there was very little difference in waiting for the beads to arrive from the USA and waiting for them to appear in Danish stores! During the course of my search for the beads in local stores, I received multiple emails alerting me to the new release but couldn’t actually obtain them anywhere.

Please note that the beads in this article were provided free of charge for consideration and review. This does not bias the outcome of the review.
