Trollbeads Copper Collection Live Images and Initial Thoughts

This Trollbeads blog brings live images and my initial thoughts on the new Trollbeads Copper Collection.

The Trollbeads Copper Collection made it’s debut at the end of April and I absolutely couldn’t resist this release. In my eyes it’s a really fantastic way to honour the continued trend for rose gold but at a far more viable price point. Sure Trollbeads could have opted for a plating solution like Pandora but why merely copy when you can offer your own version?

The announcement of a copper collection did bring about much debate however. Copper tarnishes readily and also has a habit of reacting to some skin types. The result can be an unsightly green mark where the metal has been in contact with the skin. It was confirmed by Trollbeads that no form of protective coating was applied to their new products so how would it stand up to wear?

Honestly no review can tell you whether your skin will react to copper. Not everyone does have problems with it. I received my set on release day and I couldn’t wait to start wearing it. I’ve worn it daily since that point and today I want to share my initial impressions.

Trollbeads Copper Collection

The collection consists of a new Trollbeads Copper Bangle, a simple and very plain Trollbeads Copper Bead and a set of copper stoppers. Straight out of the bag it resembles rose gold very closely. It has a lovely pink hue and a bright shine.

Part of the appeal of the copper for me, aside from the fact that I find the Trollbeads Bangle so very practical, was the option of mixing metallics. The first image below compares the copper with the simple silver bangle.

Next I added in the Trollbeads Gold Bangle (plated.) At this point it’s easy to see how pink the copper colour is when compared with gold.

For those interested in a comparison with the X Jewellery bronze, that’s shown below.

The final comparison shows the Trollbeads Copper Collection with the Pandora Rose. I only have a ring from Pandora Rose due to ongoing limited availability but hopefully it still shows how close these finishes are.

Something definitely worth noting is that the copper bangle has changed shape slightly. It’s been made slightly more oval and this is best seen if you look at the part of the bangle that would lay across the top of the wrist.

Trollbeads Copper Collection Summary

I’ve worn my bangle daily since it arrived and so far I’ve had no skin reaction at all. This surprised me as I have notoriously reactive skin. Further to that it hasn’t tarnished excessively and again this shocked me. I seem to spend a huge amount of time polishing silver. Trollbeads do recommend that you store the bangle in a ziplock plastic bag when it’s not in use and I have followed these directions.

The colour is just beautiful. Polished well it’s the closest many of us can come to rose gold. Unfortunately I absolutely don’t tan but for those who do, it will look stunning with sunkissed skin. I do adore the different metallic colours achieved from stacking all three bangles though.

As always I love to hear from my readers. What are your thoughts on the Trollbeads Copper Collection? Did you indulge in any of these pieces? Have you had issues with skin reactions? Hit the comments and let me know!

Only got mine on Saturday but absolutely love it, most exciting new release in a while. Love it when TB do this.

No reactions so far, although I don’t normally so no surprise there. Definitely want a second one once finances allow.

I thought I would have reacted to it. My skin is SO volatile. In the past I’ve been using products for years and then one day, no, we don’t like it any more. Still so far, so good!

I’m actually being naughty right now. The bangle and stoppers are sat on my desk and I’m waiting for them to tarnish to see exactly how difficult it is to polish back to a high shine 😀

I’d rather love a second too!

I got the bangle, stoppers and two copper beads (to use as spacers in combos, since I find I don’t much like the look of mixed metals with the silver beads on a copper bangle). I only got it on Friday, but I’ve been wearing it every day since, and I love it. I love the color, and it gives a warmer, richer more organic look than the silver bangle (which I also love and wear a lot). I haven’t had any skin discoloration either, although I haven’t had any problems with other copper jewelry either. As you say, I think it’s just a personal thing whether someone’s skin will react that way and can’t be predicted. I have some other copper pieces, and if you store them in a sealed plastic bag when you’re not wearing them, it does keep them bright and shiny.

And I thought the fit seemed just slightly different than the silver bangle, so thanks for confirming that! 🙂 The copper seems a bit tighter than my silver, and takes a tad more effort to get one, although I have the XS in both. And the copper doesn’t seem to wriggle around my wrist as much as the silver does, even though I’ve only been wearing five beads on it, and will frequently wear seven on the silver.

    • endangeredtrolls

You’re right about the personal thing with skin reactions. I’ve had SO many emails prior to the release asking whether or not they can expect green marks from the copper. One person even got quite offended when I said I didn’t know – to that person, I wasn’t being arrogant or short – I honestly don’t know. Unfortunately for most people, they’re going to have to try it and wear it and see.

The shape has definitely changed! It’s not a huge change but it is there. I wonder what the rationale was for that. (Oh the times I wish I could be a fly on the wall at Trollbeads HQ! :))

It’s beautiful though isn’t it? I do wish I could tan at all in summer as I think it’s going to look amazing on tanned skin! I love your idea of buying duplicate beads to use as spacers though. It’s a nice way to tie in a bracelet to a copper bangle for those that do like mixing metals.

      • Kim

I like the change in the shape. My silver bangle is always moving around, and sometimes if I’m only wearing a few beads it will flip around to the underside of my wrist. Even with seven beads, it’s still a bit loose. But the copper is a more snug fit and doesn’t move as much.

I saw another lady say below that hers tarnished severely after only a few hours wear and her skin discolored. That is really interesting, because I’ve been wearing mine constantly for the last four days, except for when I’m sleeping, and it’s still bright and shiny. The tarnishing and discoloration must be a highly personal thing, like the way some people will be eaten alive by mosquitoes and some won’t! Mosquitoes always come after me, but at least I can wear copper! 😀

        • endangeredtrolls

I’m pretty sure the tarnish rate will depend on the personal skin type and the environmental conditions too. I’m not sure where Eileen lives but apparently humidity will increase the rate it tarnishes and as does exposure to salt (so by that I assume if you live somewhere hot, the skin will sweat more and it would tarnish faster.) I assume if someone were to swim with it the result would be the same.

Apparently though – or so I have just read – the green patina that copper is famous for is pretty much dependent on the passage of time rather than any kind of exposure.

The more tarnished the copper becomes, the more likely it is to leave a green mark on the skin too.

So those ladies living in humid conditions are more likely to end up with black bangles than those of us not.

I love rose gold and have been contemplating this as a future purchase.

I like the idea of mixing metals especially swapping silver stoppers for added effect. I’m happy to read that you haven’t had any issues with the copper reacting with body chemistry although like many metals I’d say, give it time. 🙂 I supposed that it wouldn’t be a high maintenance piece of jewellery that would need to be polished continuously.
This also got me thinking about when RBF introduced their brass release last year. I still haven’t had any issues with that metal either. I just give them a quick polish before wearing.

    • endangeredtrolls

Oh yes of course, I might have a reaction in the future and it’s certainly more likely if I do let the bangle tarnish. So far I’ve been super pleased though as I was fully expecting to react almost immediately 🙂

I do prefer to keep my jewellery shiny so while I’m seeing how the bangle will tarnish when left out, long term I’ll want to keep it with a high shine. I don’t find a quick polish with a cloth high maintenance though – primarily because it’s smooth so there are no crevices to try and clean 😀

I have to confess the bangle release has made me covet a set of gold stoppers so I can really switch metals around :*(

  4. Eileen

My daughter and I both received our copper bangles and loved the look of them. Unfortunately, after wearing them for most of one day, they tarnished almost to black in places and turned our skin green as well. Very disappointing. I don’t want to have to polish daily and only wear for short periods of time. Not sure what we’re going to do at this point.

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Eileen,

You could try contacting the store you purchased from. Natural tarnishing of metals isn’t a product default but some stores might be willing to take the bangles back. Alternatively you could clean them up and sell them to other collectors. Reacting to copper is a very personal thing so there will be other collectors willing to purchase I’m sure 🙂

Sorry you have such a bad experience.

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

    • Angela

@ Eileen, Such speedy tarnishing can be the result of lotions and or medications. For a really long time my silvers were dull. I could polish them by the hour even had them polished by jewelers and within the hour they would look dull and dingy. Happened to develop an allergic reaction and had meds changed. No more dull silver. But according to my MD, sometimes metal jewelry can be a good indicator of problems within the body.

      • endangeredtrolls

Oh that’s kinda interesting! I have to always put my jewellery on a bit later in the day as I use copious amounts of hand cream and sun screen but by the time I’m putting bracelets on, everything is absorbed I think.

I love my copper bangle and copper stoppers. I just got them last week along with my silver bangle and stoppers. I have the olive-tone skin, so I like this bangle on me.

    • endangeredtrolls

Oh it must look so beautiful on you Martha 😀 I’m paler than Casper the Friendly Ghost :*( I’m so pleased to hear that you’re enjoying it too.

The copper is so beautiful. I have a large Nordic inspired copper pendant is the shape of the Midgard Serpent, I wear that all the time.

With all these copper releases, I wonder if there are any of the brands that have considered making a Dalek-bead 🙂

    http://www.doctorwhotoys.net/dalek_series7_figure1.jpg

    • endangeredtrolls

The problem is I suspect a “dalek” is covered by copyright so any brand in question would need to negotiate that. They might be able to get around it by making something similar and giving it a totally different name but if “daleks” are covered by copyright it could still be argued they were infringing copyright.

There’s a store on artfire called Donald James Designs that makes a lot of game themed charms ^^ He has some Doctor Who themed things over there (including a dalek! though it’s a bit on the larger side). It’s just that the charms aren’t made from silver, but rather, fine pewter which may irk some.

here’s a link if you’d like to see his dalek bead: http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/product_view/DonaldJamesDesigns/10398378/

I guess you are right, but it would be cool 🙂

    • Megan

If you are familiar with not-so-distant Trollbeads uniques, there is a green-striped glass bead with amber circles trimmed with black. To me, that’s my Dalek. I grouped it with a wonky amber (regeneration), Big Faces (people/aliens from travels), WT Hong Kong Skyline (all space & time), and Sahara Jewel Facet bead (Tardis & companions) on a bangle.

      • endangeredtrolls

There’s some nice representation there Megan 😀 We just gotta be creative when it comes to copyright products 😀

I would love to see one live. Not sure if I am going to indulge. Love the rose color.

Oh I hope you manage to 🙂 It’s very pretty 🙂 I have a concept store close to me now and all of the girls there are wearing the copper 🙂

  9. Mel

I like your comparisons with all 3 bangles together. I’ve worn mine since release day – I got the bangle, stoppers and seabed set from Trollbeads Cambridge. I’ve not stored in a bag or even in my jewellery box (naughty me) but just left it on my bedside table. So far no tarnishing or green skin! I have the extra small bangle and it did feel bigger than my silver one but I managed to squash it a bit so now it’s very similar to the fit of the silver one on me.

    • endangeredtrolls

I seem to be a bit in between sizes on the bangles. The XS fits me best once it’s on but ohhh my gosh, putting it on makes me feel so uncomfortable as it really presses into my wrist. It almost makes me feel nauseous 🙁 So I’ve started wearing the smalls instead. They do wiggle quite a bit on me but they’re much more comfortable to actually put on!

I’m so pleased to hear that you’ve had no issue with the green lines either 😀

      • Martha

I wear the XXS bangle, and it still moves around on my arm; however, it only slides halfway up, so it’s an improvement on Pandora or Ohm Beads bangles that go almost to my elbow at their smallest size.

        • endangeredtrolls

Oh sweetie 🙁 I can imagine what a struggle it must be with some brands!! The XS definitely fits me better once it’s on my wrist but I really hate putting it on so I have a couple of S too. The S also allows me to use more beads which can be handy but it moves around a lot on my wrist and like you mentioned, it can slide a fair way up my arm. I need something in between the XS and the S 😛 You know.. just to be difficult!

hi Victoria, I bought the copper set for therapeutic reason…..tendinitis of the elbow, and ,be it purely psychological or not ,it really works! No more pain ,and ,mobility for all the elbow grease jobs! XxCarmy

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Carmy 🙂

I don’t think it matters whether it’s psychological or “real”, if you feel better then that’s just great! 😀

  11. Linda

i’m not sure the copper is for me, but I find it very interesting that the shape is more oval. I haven’t bought the silver bangle yet because i didn’t like the way it felt on. if you have any American Indian cuff bracelets, the shape is always oval. Much more comfortable. I hope they will change the silver to this shape. I also hope they make a few more copper beads. Continue with the modern look and do some simple, abstract designs. But i bet we will see a copper heart soon…

    • endangeredtrolls

I’ve not heard anything about whether they will change the shape of the silver and gold bangles. On the other hand I doubt they’d make any kind of announcement about it anyway.

Please no more hearts 🙁 At least not for a while. Now here’s a thing.. imagine some copper for Halloween…

I have had my copper bangle for nearly two weeks now and have worn it every day, so far so good have not had any green marks on my wrist! I have found it does tarnish quickly and was black by the end of the week, dont keep it in a bag overnight and do tend to wear lotion everyday so that is probably a factor, as live in the UK so hot , humid days ( well so far ) have not made an appearance. However have found it so easy to polish and get the shine back it is not a problem, Wednesday today and still shiny so doing well this week, despite this am loving the copper, am a big fan of the silver too and have worn mine every day since buying it, would love the gold plated one too – maybe one day !

    • endangeredtrolls

I’m so pleased to hear this Julie, especially that you’ve had no difficulty in polishing it back to a shine. Mine is still quite shiny (figures when I actually want something to tarnish, it won’t! ;))

I have to say, I truly think the copper is a great addition to the line, especially as a bangle as it’s cheaper than the silver. I wear my bangles so much so I’d never say they weren’t worth their retail price but still… someone has to be able to *afford* that retail price!

      xxx

  13. Melinda

I so badly want this, I hope to pick one up soon! So much more affordable than a rose gold bracelet…

    • endangeredtrolls

Yes MUCH more affordable. I think it’s a brilliant take on the rose gold trend. It’s not expensive and it avoids the issues with plated jewellery. It was just an incredibly smart move by Trollbeads I think. To me it also feels so “them”. Pandora copy the trend with Pandora Rose. Trollbeads go with copper. It’s perfect 😀

  14. stacecase

I LOVE the copper bangle. The first time I wore the copper bangle it didn’t discolor my skin but the second time it was very warm and I was doing something active and my wrist got a bit sweaty, then I did have a green ring and the inside of the bangle was nearly black. It washes off your skin very easily though and a quick polish had the bangle shining like new as well so this doesn’t bother me at all. I’ve worn it more times since then with no coloration (but also no sweat ;))

  15. Kelly

I was so excited to receive mine for mothers day. I’ve worn it two days in a row and have green lines on my wrist. I am very upset. I was not expecting this at all :(.
The bracelet lost its shine where it touches my skin and I can’t get the shine back. No matter how much I polish it.

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Kelly,

Unfortunately some people do react to copper while other people do not. It’s also made worse once the bracelet has been allowed to tarnish. Trollbeads can’t actually predict (and nor can I,) who will react to the bangle and who won’t.

Copper dulls to a brown tarnish and the speed at which it tarnishes depends on lots of factors – both your skin type and external influences such as hand cream, humidity and exposure to other chemicals. What are you polishing it with? I’ve been using a silver polishing cloth on mine with great success. If you search online however you’ll find that there are lots of ways to remove the tarnish from copper. Some people place copper into a boiling pan of water with a table spoon of salt and vinegar. This seems to be the method that requires the least actual “polishing” as the tarnish should then rinse away under water. I’ve never tried it though! I’ve also read of great success rubbing tarnished areas with lemon or lime. Again I haven’t tried it as so far mine has stayed quite shiny. When not in use Trollbeads are recommending that you store them in ziplock plastic bags to help keep the moisture out and the tarnish away 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

finally saw the copper bangle here in Belgium and fell in love with the pink color immediatly. Especially since it was stalled in the window with very green beads on it: oasis and amazonite. Beautiful! Since i like special green colours, and loved the combination with the pink copper colour, I bought it.
I wore it ever since, it has not been off my wrist, not even for sleeping. I didn’t have a skin reaction in the beginning, but now and yesterday it has been starting to turn my skin green. To be fair, it is extremely hot here in Belgium for the moment, maybe that has an influence, since I didn’t have the reaction at first. It washes aff immediatly with water and soap, so that’s that.
I love the rose gold colour of the bangle, but to keep it shiny en rosy like I have to clean it regularly with a cloth because the colour turns darker rather quick. I imagine some people don’t mind it darker, but I prefer the light rose gold colour.
Even now with the mild green skin reaction, I keep wearing my bangle. I just wash my wrist and clean my bangle regularly.
I would prefer not to have the reaction, but I don’t have a budget for real rose gold jewels unfortunatly.

    • endangeredtrolls

The hotter it gets, the more your skin will change (as will the air around of course) so that’s definitely a factor. I’m currently cleaning mine with ketchup which seems to be working well for me to keep that shine. Like you I don’t really want it dark to be honest. I want it to look like rose but again, like you, I can’t actually afford rose gold 😉

I do hope the reacts will stop again for you as the weather cools.

I recently got my copper bracelet with 2 copper stoppers, along with some Redbalifrog charms and absolutely love it all!!! And it goes wonderfully with my Pandora Rose Gold bracelet and charms! I am wondering if you can tell me what the stamp should say on the Troll copper bracelet? A google search doesn’t come up with anything. Just curious – thanks! 😀

    • endangeredtrolls

It’s CU (periodic table symbol) and LAA 🙂

Thank you so much for your very quick reply! Love all the information you give all of us here! Wonder why Troll Beads doesn’t post about that anywhere on the internet for inquiring minds?
