Ohm Beads Wings of Protection Inspiration

This Ohm Beads blog brings inspiration for the Ohm Beads Wings of Protection on a moth themed bracelet.

When I first saw the preview for the Ohm Beads Wings of Protection, I had slightly mixed feelings. I loved the butterfly design and I loved the size. I groaned at the sleeping baby. I can of course appreciate that that particular detail is part of the appeal for so many collectors, not to mention apt for a Mother's Day Bead of the Month. For me personally though, it caused a conflict as it has absolutely no relevance to me.

With that in mind I didn't have particularly high hopes for the bead when it arrived or I didn't expect to find much personal use for it. For the sake of social media, I put it on a bracelet with some of the new True Beadz Shadow glass and snapped a couple of images. Shortly after I fell a little bit in love with it.

I wanted to create a darker, moth inspired bracelet. This is actually hilarious in some way as I am terrified of moths and butterflies; they're the only insect or animal that genuinely scares me and I'm happy to evacuate a room to avoid either. I couldn't quite make the combination work until a number of Trollbeads amber beads arrived from Great Lakes Boutique. This bracelet may possibly become a permanent combination.

Ohm Beads Wings of Protection Inspiration

This isn't a review as the design sold out so quickly anyway and frankly, I don't want to focus on the bead in it's entirety, rather on how I've styled it away from Mother's Day. Due to the size I have found it tends to sit on the top of my wrist with the butterfly detailing facing upwards, thus hiding the baby entirely.

As mentioned above I've combined it with some of the new True Beadz Shadow glass, a couple of darker Trollbeads stones and some of the bright, gritty Trollbeads amber I received. There is a bead index at the end of the article.

I'm wearing it stacked with my retirement editions of the ACA Kreations Ignis and the custom gold Ignis ("as a moth to a flame" will probably be engraved on my tombstone.)

Ohm Beads Wings of Protection Summary

Wings of Protection itself sold out at many retailers within moments of the pre-orders beginning, though the lovely new Ohm Beads Butterflies is readily available and so beautifully detailed!

Please do remember that the hangover party at Great Lakes Boutique is ending in two hours (midnight EST, 6pm European time) and all those lovely ambers will be removed and saved for the autumn event. If you're looking for ambers such as these featured here, they were a part of this batch (and I'd appreciate anyone removing the temptation from me.)

I'm so pleased with this bracelet! It's actually quite rare that I stumble across a combination I truly love and even more a rarity that it's a full bracelet.

As always I love to hear from my readers. What are your thoughts on the Ohm Beads Wings of Protection and did you manage to obtain one? Hit the comments and let me know!

This is really magnificent! I love it! I had your exact same thoughts about the baby aspect and therefore bypassed the bead. Seeing how it looks here (and on some IG posts), it is truly lovely. I even love the butterfly, even though I, too, am afraid of them (thought I was the only one!). Your use of color here is just perfect. Good dark bracelets are sometimes hard to compose, but you really nailed it!

    • endangeredtrolls

*Terrified* of them. I can deal with most animals but oh god.. moths and butterflies. It’s the way they fly – too erratic! I just have to leave the room 😀

It’s not perfect yet but I’m really pleased with it so far 😀 The ambers made all the difference 😀

      xoxo

It’s a little difficult to explain, but occasionally I will look at a bracelet and immediately think ” that is perfect.” I LOVE what you did here with a bead that might not have been something you would normally have considered for yourself. I didn’t get the Wings of Protection bead; despite the fact that I am a mother I just didn’t care for it. If I had the insight to do what you did with it…. well I don’t have that kind of insight.

    • endangeredtrolls

Do you really like it? 😀 It’s not often I truly fall in love with one of my own designs. I have one bangle that more of less stays together because it has sentimental beads but keeping a bracelet together is very rare for me 😀

      xoxo

  3. Marta Idalia

This is a bead I would have love to have. But I couldn’t get it.
A pity. It would have been great on the bracelet dedicated to my son.

    • endangeredtrolls

Yeah they went *so* fast! It was funny in one way because there had been so many complaints on social media about the price before anyone even saw the bead. Then within minutes of pre-orders beginning, most large retailers had sold out :O

Do keep an eye on the trading groups and such. Today’s “must have” beads often exchange hands when people see their next “must haves.”

      xoxo

      • Nereida

Incredibly stunning, both the Wings and the Butterfly. Funny you mention the grousing about the price. When I read the price I was an instant “no”, until I kept scrolling and actually saw the bead. But it wasn’t meant to be. I think after the rutilated quartz my next must have will have to be the faerybeads rose gold heart with the baby inside.

        • endangeredtrolls

As I mentioned in reply to another lady, it’s always worth watching the trading groups on Facebook. Some people always rush in to buy a design because it’s limited.. and it’s the current must have.. and then later down the line they might realise actually, it doesn’t work for them OR they need to free up funds for another must have. So trades or resales are always possible.

I’m so pleased this bracelet is getting good feedback because as I said, it’s not often I really like one of my designs so I was hoping it wasn’t just “me” :p

          xoxo

          • Nereida

I’ve already seen it up for trade. But I think I only want one cradled baby and since this one isn’t for sale, I won’t waste any time thinking about it. I’m sure it’s for the best getting holding a child in your heart. How can anyone go wrong with 18K rose gold?

          • endangeredtrolls

Can never go wrong with rose 😉 At least in my opinion 😀

            xoxo

  4. Gene

When my son was around five or so he was outside and was (I swear!) chased by butterflies. Over 25 years have passed and he still avoids them. I know he can relate with your fear of them.

    • endangeredtrolls

That makes three of us now then! At least I’m not alone 😉

      xoxo

    • Nereida

I think you just5 described what would be my kids heaven. We always went to Butterfly gardens at the zoo and they tried to get them to land on them. And then those fireflies in the summer.

      • endangeredtrolls

        *Shudder*

  5. Beth

I’m in the “I adore this” camp, too! I love the moodiness your bracelet evokes. In fact, I think that’s why I decided to hunt one down even though the baby doesn’t resonate with me either. The butterfly feels moody, maybe kind of Gothic, to me. Once I had mine in hand, I decided the baby was really a fairy baby. All’s well in my world. 😉

    • endangeredtrolls

Yes!!! See I agree! The baby really turned me off when I saw the stock images but I’m so happy with the actual design. On my wrist I’ve yet to see the baby.. with the bead being so long it lays on the top of my hand and I love that! I’ve not tried it on the ball necklace yet though so I don’t know if there’s some movement there.

I agree with you! It’s gothic! And I *love* your thought on it being a fairy baby.

      xoxo

      • Beth

I’ve had mine on an Ohm twisted bangle with just a pair of the Bare stoppers. Even though it occasionally flips (my wrists are bigger than yours), it’s just so interesting looking that I haven’t minded. Also because: fairy baby! 😉 It does flip around a bit on the ball necklace. Last week, though, I wore it out on a day I had a few appointments, and besides my bracelets, it was my only accessory with a black sweater. I got so many compliments. And none of them were about the baby! 😊

  6. Kim

Stunning bracelet! The ambers are perfect, and I love the rest of the design too. Including the Lunas was brilliant. The Wings of Protection is an amazing piece. I passed it up due partly to the price and partly to not liking the baby, but it looks wonderful here. Although I normally tend to gravitate more to the clear ambers, I liked your gritty ones so much that I grabbed one from Great Lakes this afternoon (and one with sparkles too).

There’s a butterfly garden at a local museum, and when I go in it, I tend to duck if the butterflies come too close to me! They’re fine from a small distance, but I don’t want them near me. 🙂

    • endangeredtrolls

Yay you grabbed some ambers! 😀 I’ve been really pleased with mine. I like the gritty ones in general but I’d told Mike to choose me some pretty ones and I literally squealed when they arrived. You have some spectacular ambers already though 😉

Butterflies.. I think it’s the way they fly… you can’t predict where they are going 🙁 The other thing – for me at least – is I’m terrified of them getting in my damn hair. When it’s in it’s curly state, they’d be trapped there fluttering about and oh my god, just the thought :O :O

      xoxo

      • Kim

I don’t like bugs in general, and no matter how pretty they are, butterflies are still bugs! 😉

I’m looking forward to those ambers arriving, I must say! There’s just something about them…

        • endangeredtrolls

I can’t wait to hear what you think when they arrive. I must confess I basically told Mike to pick me some “pretty ambers that sparkle” and left the rest to him :p I think in some way amber gets bad press. I think some people feel it’s dated and hard to style to look modern but I disagree, I think it’s *all* in the styling! 😀

Let me know when they arrive! 😀

          xoxo

Hi Victoria! Is there a date set for the autumn Great Lakes Bead event yet?

    • endangeredtrolls

Yes! But! I don’t know if I’m allowed to make it public yet so hmm :p Lemme chat to Mike and let you know 😉

  8. Angela

Butterflies I love and am always so pleased when they visit my garden.I feel as you do when it comes to Snakes ,their movement gives me the creeps. Son was away at college roommates 3 footer had disappeared from its cage the night before they were released for Spring break.Told Hubby he could not go and pick him up till it was found. Did not care if the dorm was closing for the break send him money let him find a place to stay, just not welcome home.
I had visions of that thing coming out of his bags.
Even after he called and said it was found, I was still in a panic told them but he could only come home if he left his stuff there and stripped down before he entered the house.I
    still shudder with that thought.
But Victoria,I love, love this composition. As Beth said it shows a bit of moodiness but is still serene.Butterflies are light as feathers but I like the contrast of weight plus the Ambers and the whole photograph suggest something timelessness,I would keep this intact for a long long time.
Going to try recreating this , as I only have one Shiny Luna will use Live Free from the Bee collection as a substitute for the Dirty Luna. So frustrating sometimes buying only one of the Bead of the month then realizing that I like it more than I thought I would, or making a nice combination that would even be better with two and horror of horrors the bead is all sold out . Wings of Protection was pretty pricey still happy I did not pass, also I really appreciate the Baby, after it arrived thought of getting another but there were none to be had from anywhere.
Victoria, Pictures look fab, did you get a new camera or what ?

    • endangeredtrolls

Oh sweetie I *wish* I had a new camera. I’m desperate for some new equipment but alas, the bank account is not permitting :*( I guess I just got lucky with these shots 😉

Your story about the snake made me giggle (I’m sorry!) But it is awful when you are genuinely afraid of something because fear *isn’t* rational. All rational thought just stops 😀 So it can be funny to look back or when it’s not you 😉

At least you got the Wings of Protection though. So so many collectors are left without one of these :*(

      xoxo

  9. Lorie

That bracelet combination is stunning! I love it. I have been on the fence about buying the butterfly but seeing it in this combo has me sold now! I love the way you used the ambers too, they are some of my favorite beads. Thanks for the new inspiration!

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hey Lorie!

Okay so I was completely unconvinced about the Butterflies when I saw the preview. Not because I actively disliked the design but because I’m just not *that* kind of girl. Flowers.. hearts.. butterflies.. it’s not me you know? So I thought it was pretty but not me. When it arrived I was impressed because firstly, it’s larger than I thought. Secondly, it’s really well executed and third, it’s not “cute”. They didn’t do anything to it to make it overly cute or fluffy and I appreciate that.

But rather than attempt anything too girly with it, which again isn’t me, I wanted to go a little darker and I think it works. I’ve also pondered some kind of enchanted, fairy garden idea with it.. maybe again a bit darker and moodier.

So pleased there’s a fellow amber lover out there though 😀

      xoxo

  10. Alexandra R

    I love it!
When I wear Wings of Protection on a bangle, it tends to stay with the baby side up. I’ll have to try it on a bracelet to change its look then. I love the bead as it is and apart from being a mother, the baby makes me think of Thumbelina, and I read A LOT of fairy tales as a child (and am now reading them to my daughter). But I really LOVE your bracelet. The colours are gorgeous. I need some more ambers but I’ll have to wait for the next event 😉

    • endangeredtrolls

I haven’t tried it on a bangle yet! It’s funny as generally I only wear bangles but I knew I’d have so many beads for this idea that it would absolutely need to be a bracelet. Normally if I’m going to “review” a charm or bead I do try it on different carriers but I didn’t see much point with this because ultimately regardless of my opinion, it’s sold out.

The wishlists are always too long!! 😀

      xoxo
