Novobeads Nautilus Clasp Review

This charm jewellery blog brings an extensive review of the Novobeads Nautilus Clasp, the perfect finishing touch for oceanic themed bracelets.

Both Trollbeads and Pandora showed oceanic and beach themed charms for summer 2013. While Trollbeads debuted their own seahorse and playing dolphins locks to compliment their own range, I coveted the Novobeads nautilus clasp for quite some time. Novobeads clasps are designed to act as an integral and fluid part of the bracelet. The brand aimed to remove the distinct break in bracelet aesthetic seen in Trollbeads. When I originally reviewed the Novobeads maple leaf clasp (pictured below,) there was enormous interest in the concept and today brings a similar examination of their nautilus clasp.

For the benefit of new readers or those unfamiliar with Novobeads, these clasps are fully compatible with Trollbeads silver bracelets.

The Novobeads nautilus clasp boasts the distinctive seashell design, with the shape hiding the more practical and necessary clasp features quite successfully.

Generally speaking the size of the Novobeads clasps is smaller than Trollbeads or Redbalifrog locks. Most of this is by design as the locking mechanisms are hidden as much as possible.

Novobeads clasps function by pressing down on the largest side. Due to the pivot system employed by the design, this releases both sides to be attached to the chain. It can feel a little alien initially for those used to the Trollbeads style locks, but it’s functional and simple to use once you’re familiar.

Obviously this lock is the perfect complement to an oceanic or beach themed bracelet. As part of the Novobeads spring 2013 collection, two new crystal beads made their debut in the beautiful and sumptuous shades of sea green and plum. I was keen to incorporate these beads into the showcase bracelet. The splash of berry shade also offers a subtle nod to the upcoming fall season. For those keen to be ahead of the curve in terms of colours, this combination is perfect.

Undoubtedly more cohesive bracelet design is part of the vast appeal of the Novobeads clasps. On a full bracelet, the clasp is more reminiscent of a silver bead than a lock.

Novobeads Nautilus Clasp Summary

Novobeads clasps always feel a little fresh as the difference they can make to a bracelet is actually quite dramatic. I love Trollbeads and Redbalifrog locks but it’s always welcome to see a slightly different take or execution on a concept. I love locks to be an integral part of a bracelet concept. That is to say when I’m creating a themed bracelet, I endeavour to select a lock that feels appropriate. This can be difficult at times I admit (which is why I’m always ludicrously excited to hear of upcoming lock releases.) The Novobeads range of clasps have some themes not really represented by other brands and a larger selection is always a positive.

As always I love to hear from my readers. What are your thoughts on the Novobeads nautilus clasp and indeed their locking concept in general? Have you added any Novobeads to your collection yet? Hit the comments and let me know!

Love it!! I’ve been so tempted to get either this one or their leaf lock but the only problem is that I think I’d need a longer chain.

When my current chains are full, I can just about fit the TB Swan or Floral locks while the Big Fish is the easiest as it gives a little more room. Since the Novobeads locks are that bit shorter, I think I’d really struggle…however a longer chain means more room for beads so I’m extremely tempted… 😉

Hope you’re well and enjoyed your break!

      Hi Bethany 🙂

I hope you’re well and enjoying your summer 🙂 Unfortunately my holiday was actually only five days long and it felt far too short! We’re now approaching the time of year where I’m super busy too.

The Novobeads clasps are indeed smaller than Trollbeads or Redbalifrog so that needs to be accounted for. They’re really lovely though. Their design is totally different to Trollbeads or Redbalifrog locks and it gives a very different look. The maple leaf clasp is still my favourite as it’s texturing is just divine! Novobeads were kind enough to send me both this lock and their butterfly lock and I’m loving them! I must admit though, I’m a bit of a lock addict 😉

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

I love the maple leaf for all my outdoor themed bracelet – especially living in New England. The Nautilus is perfect! I really appreciate being able to incorporate this seashell into a beach or seashore-themed bracelet without giving up bead space. I use the 7.5″ TB bracelet with regular TB locks, and the 7.1″ with large flower & fish TB locks. So with maple leaf, since it’s shorter than both, I use the longer chain too and it seems to work out fine.

    • endangeredtrolls

The maple leaf is really lovely – it’s one of my favourite locks because it’s so different to anything else out there. I like that without careful viewing, these look more like another silver bead as opposed to an actual lock. With Trollbeads or Redbalifrog you get a very distinct break. That’s not a bad thing! But I like it different sometimes too 🙂

I’d love to see Novobeads bring out some new locks for fall 😉 (Along with the darker coloured silk wraps that I’m hoping for ;))

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

    Hi Victoria

Do you know, l love the Novo locks but the big problem with them is the import charges into the
UK from the USA…the cheeky devils charge £8 every time they apply tax and import fees to your parcel
so the tax/fees might be £5 or similar but they charge you £8 for the privilege of charging you that £5!!!
It is a complete rip-off and the only thing that stops me buying Novo beads products. l would love to buy
come of their locks and silk wraps BUT its just too much money on top of the cost of the items- we are
only permitted £15 of goods from outside the EU without taxes/fees which is pretty useless really!

So this girl wont be buying Novobeads anytime soon until they get a retailer inside the EU—quite sad
    about this….. 🙁

      Hi janey,

I have the exact same problem in Denmark. First they hit you with import taxes and then they charge you for the privilege of applying those taxes. By the time you’re done, the overall cost of the beads can be quite high. I have ongoing issues with the tax authority regarding product samples too. Under Danish laws a company isn’t allowed to “gift” an individual anything – it’s considered inappropriate marketing. This is why we never get any free gift with purchase style promotions here.

The big issue with Novobeads is their history with Trollbeads. The two companies were involved in a legal dispute years ago and due to this, many Trollbeads retailers will not consider stocking Novobeads. Ideally it needs to be a retailer that has no involvement with Trollbeads who picks them up. Of course add to that the fact that they’d likely need a distributor too… 🙁

I’d love to see Novobeads come to the EU. I keep hoping that Bead Sensation will perhaps pick them up since they’re not an authorised Trollbeads retailer so they don’t really have that to worry about!

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

      • Faye

        Taxes are no fun.
If all the Trollbeads imitators – Pandora, Chamilia, Novabeads, Lovelinks, Persona, Brighton – would pay a tiny royalty to Trollbeads for coming up with the idea it would go along way to smooth the way for customers being able to buy any beautiful bead they want from their favorite dealers! I do love lots of brands’ beads, but I also sympathize with Trollbeads for being the ones who originated the idea.

        • endangeredtrolls

Trollbeads generally seem quite willing to allow their retailers to stock whatever they please – though I’m sure there are some demands made but I know little about that side of things. The issue with Novobeads is related to the company behind them and the fact they were originally the US distributor for Trollbeads. I don’t want to get into the specific legal details publicly for multiple reasons – one of those being that I can only express what *I* personally know and it’s likely that is not the whole story. Some key retailers were involved in the court case and that leaves a slightly precarious situation between Trollbeads retailers and Novobeads.

Of course there are hundreds of retailers out there that stock the likes of Pandora and Lovelinks but have zero involvement in Trollbeads. As I mentioned before there is also Bead Sensation who picked up the European distributor role for Ohm Beads. They’re not an authorized Trollbeads retailer so perhaps they’d consider Novobeads!

Of course I’m also assuming here that Novobeads are interested in an EU presence – for all I know, they might not be!

Regardless of all that, I wholly appreciate the European fans wanting these beads but passing due to import duties 🙁 Indeed my collection is smaller than I’d like for the same reason 🙁 It’s such a shame as they have some lovely designs too.

          Kind Regards
          Victoria

    Hi Victoria
Just been thinking on the Novo problem…
We need a kind novo fairy in the USA who we can e mail to buy us the beads or locks we want and we can pay them on
paypal for the items and postage – this way they can send stuff to the EU as gifts!!! So – no taxes or duties hahahahaha!

      Hi janey 🙂

The problem with this is that marking it as a gift still doesn’t always guarantee stuff skips through imports. I have so many brands mark everything as gifts to me and still imports can get very angry about them and refuse to release without taxes.

The whole thing is terribly frustrating 🙁

  5. Elizabeth

Revisiting this… shoot, I just ordered some belated holiday/early birthday gifts including a bracelet set for a smaller gal — would have loved it if I had remembered about this smaller TB-friendly clasp. Oh well… another time.

    • Faye

      Elizabeth,
The Nautilus clasp is beautiful! I have it for one my Summer bracelets – I usually play with two ongoing through the Summertime. One has the TB’s Fish Lock, and the other is a RBF bracelet chain with the Novobeads Nautilus lock. Both are beautiful!

  6. Patricia

I’ve bought this clasp thanks to this site! 🙂 I’m making an ocean themed bracelet and think it would look lovely on it. It’s a shame about the fees and taxes ( I don’t know how much it will be as I haven’t received it yet) but I figured that if I bought a Trollbeads lock ( which I don’t like as much) I would have spent about the same amount in total anyway. The site said they were out of stock but I sent them an e-mail and they had one for me . I found them very helpfull 🙂

    • Faye

Good for you Patricia! You’ll enjoy it, it’s different and looks like a bead. The one thing I do – and you may not have this bead so it won’t matter, is I put my Red Bali Frog Nautilus on my other Summer bracelet, but it could look cool on the same bracelet as the Novobeads lock too! Let us all know how you like it when it arrives! Novobeads are great. I recently bought a few more of their CZ’s, gorgeous.

      • endangeredtrolls

        Mmmmm Novobeads CZs 😀 😀

        <3

    • endangeredtrolls

Where abouts are you located Patricia? Do remember Perlen stock Novobeads now too!

Back to the actual lock, you’ll love it. Novobeads have always tried to make their locks look more like beads and I think that’s great. Elfbeads are trying a similar thing. I do like not having that “break” in a bracelet.

      xxx
