Novobeads Maple Leaf Clasp Review

Today's blog article offers an in depth review at the Novobeads Maple Leaf clasp.

When my Novobeads bracelet arrived back in December, the components I was most excited to receive was the actual bracelet and the clasp. Novobeads utilise a slightly different locking system to many brands with the clasp acting as a more integral part of the bracelet. This intrigued me enormously. Some of the Trollbeads locks are incredible but they look separate from the rest of the bracelet, it's very clear where the bracelet fastens. The concept of attempting to integrate a lock into the actual design gives the potential for more fluid combinations that aren't "broken" by the practical need for a closure.

The clasp I chose was the Novobeads Maple Leaf clasp. From the stock images the use of texture appealed to me and I could see potential versatility in the design. Furthermore I have always adored the Trollbeads tree lock.

What follows is my opinion on the Novobeads Maple Leaf Clasp and their locking system in a more general sense. For the benefit of new readers or those unfamiliar with this brand, the locks are compatible with Trollbeads bracelets in addition to their own system.

The first thing I'd like to stress is the lock is very eye catching. This isn't saying the beads aren't attractive, they absolutely are. Indeed the mini CZ beads are utterly adorable and among my favourite at the moment (and for reference they'll be reviewed in an upcoming article also.) The lock, however, is almost mesmerising. The detailing of the leaf veining is quite exquisite and a beautiful contrast between the oxidised background and the high shine raised details is eye catching.

The actual hook parts of the lock are designed to work with the design. In the case of the maple leaf lock, the two hooks curve, almost invisibly away from the surface as part of the main veining and stem of the leaf. This makes it difficult to see, at first glance, how the lock is meant to function (or indeed that it is a clasp!)

As I mentioned Novobeads have attempted to make the locks a more integral part of the bracelet and part of this demands an entirely different mechanism. The lock is opened by gently pressing top part of the leaf.

As a side note, this lock was not responsible for the tiny chip in the nail varnish. Indeed if anything I suspect this system is far more manicure friendly that the Trollbeads locks or the Pandora barrel bracelets (though very kindly Ohm Beads did send me a clasp opener after I've whined so often about my manicures being ruined.)

Novobeads Maple Leaf Clasp Conclusion

I'm very impressed with this Novobeads clasp. Not only is it simple to use from the perspective of a wearer but the design is intuitive, different and clever. With many Trollbeads locks, it feels as though the design is created around the shape of a basic lock. This undoubtedly limits the options available when it comes to lock designs. By comparison, the Novobeads locks feels as though the practical element is a second thought to the design they're aiming for. It's seamlessly integrated and feels in no way awkward.

My initial encounter with the Novobeads clasp system has left me excited, intrigued and eager to see more. It opens up a new level of creativity in regards to themed bracelets by removing the obvious jarring element of a lock. I'd like to stress, I do like many Trollbeads locks and indeed the ability to change this feature is something that initially attracted me to Trollbeads over Pandora. Nevertheless, the Trollbeads system leaves a very definitive break in the design of the bracelet and Novobeads have the potential to challenge this.

The lock is lovely!Any answer from Perlen if they will consider Novobeads?

    • endangeredtrolls

It really is lovely. I’m rather taken by their locking mechanism and I admit I’d love to see more of their clasps.

I’m afraid not 🙁 I think Perlen are taking up Ohm Beads as a priority though I’ve not had 100% confirmation on this.

      Kind Regards

    Victoria –

What an amazing clasp! Can you use it with a TB bracelet? I really don’t want to start another bracelet system right now. 🙂 Nor do I want to start buying TB Universal core…

    Thanks!
    Wendy

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Wendy,

You absolutely can use it with a Trollbeads bracelet and I totally understand that perspective 😀

      Kind Regards

Ooh, I’ve looked at them before, but nothing has really caught my eye – being Canadian I may need to get that lock though!

What is the sizing (length) like compared to a Trollbeads lock? Just wondering if I would also have to pick up a bracelet in a different length than what I have right now 😉

    Thanks 🙂

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Tracy 🙂

Thanks for stopping by 🙂 The clasp is really lovely – very decorative and quite different to anything else I’ve seen before.

I just compared it to the Trollbeads lock with buds I have sat on my desk and the Novobeads clasp is about 1 cm shorter in length.

End to end it’s about 1.6 centimetres where as the Trollbeads budded lock is 2.5cm. I hope that helps 🙂

      Kind Regards

I really like this clasp system, from your description! Thanks for the review. 🙂

Most welcome of course! It’s a very nice clasp and it’s nice to see something just a little bit different 🙂

Hello!!! I was always thinking the same about trollbeads locks… I love them but I feel they go separately of the rest of the bracelet, and with lot of beads they act broking or something like that. I was always thinking about a lock that works like a bead, and when o New about novobeads in your blog, I checked their page, and loved some beads, but I don’t know why I didn’t saw this special locks… You have to use a longer bracelet??
And I think the bracelet is beauty too, fits trollbeads with normal core on it?
I don’t like the Pandora normal bracelet.. but this one, redbalifrog, and a new one that I founded recently yes!! This new is faerybeads, do you know about them? I like!
Hope all is well for you. a hug!!

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi :))

I’ve used the Novobeads clasp with my Trollbeads bracelets fine – I didn’t need to change the size of the bracelet at all 🙂 If your bracelet is very tight you might need a larger bracelet but I think most people would be perfectly ok with their existing chains. The bracelet is also beautiful as you said and it fits Trollbeads small core beads just fine 🙂 In fact I have just been writing an article where you will see Trollbeads on the Novobeads chain 🙂

The Redbalifrog chain is beautiful – I absolutely love it and I wear it a lot without beads because I think it is so pretty 🙂 Faerybeads I know very little about I’m afraid – sorry! 🙂

      /hugs

    Victoria,

Thanks so much for the lock review.I love that it looks like a charm.I liked that the Pandora clasp blended with the charms on a full bracelet ,did not like how Troll just seemed to stick out and screamed lock.Don’t get me wrong, I liked the Troll locks for their design (especially the Mexico and Big Flower locks) but using them on a bracelet leaves a lot to be desired plus some seem a bit flimsy, I love the larger silver pieces and like wearing a full bracelet but am constantly fearing that the lock will give way and the stopper wont be able to keep the beads in place.
Have not gotten a Redbali system as yet but just from photos they seem more substantial than Troll.Trying to decide which to get first this adorable Maple or the RBF Heart. Ha, just realized there is a Novobead dealer 23 miles from my home. Lordy, I need to go see them like I need a hole in my head , here goes another bracelet line…..Victoria and Leann , my Hubby says “no thanks for all your help with my bead situation”LOL
    Blessings.

Thanks for the laugh about your hubby Angela! I know what you mean, I was revising my wishlist today and it includes so many different brands…

Remember to add Noosa now also 😉

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Angela 🙂

It’s lovely isn’t it? I know exactly what you mean. I’m a devoted Trollbeads collector (as I’m sure everyone knows) but it’s nice to see something different and I think the way these clasps can be integrated into a design is rather intuitive 🙂

My sincerest apologies to your husband ;)If it makes you feel better (or him), you should see the state of our house when new deliveries have been 😀

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

p.s the Novobeads mini CZs are luscious! 😉

    • rainey

Lucky for you to get to try one of these clasps out! They’re very different but once you accustom yourself to them you’ll LOVE them.

I believe there’s a video on the website. At least there was when I got my first one.

Victoria, you did a yeoman’s job of trying to explain the mechanism but I don’t think there is any explaining it. It just has to be seen to be understood and appreciated.

      • endangeredtrolls

You are correct rainey and perhaps I should edit in the actual video Novobeads have on their site. I actually never thought of that :*(

        Kind Regards
        Victoria

  8. rainey

As I understand it, Novobeads is a company owned by Lund, the former TB US distributor. So they’re intimately familiar with the territory and have made beads and locks that interchange seamlessly. (Can’t say that about the chain but only because I haven’t tried that yet.)

    • endangeredtrolls

You are correct indeed! Unfortunately they didn’t part on the best of terms either. That aside, it’s nice to see someone cater for the smaller cored beads rather than larger cored versions as I think it’s nice to have an alternative at times. It feels like most brands are more Pandora sized cores, which there’s nothing wrong with of course, but it can be frustrating for the Trollbeads collectors!

This is why I was super happy when the Redbalifrog bracelet was small enough to accommodate the Trollbeads cores 😀

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

  9. Angela

    rainey,
You are so right about Miss Victoria trying to explaining the Novobead lock even after reading it over a couple times and going to the site to see their other locks I could not figure out how it would hold in place if all that was needed was to squeeze the leaf tips together, does it have a hook someplace?

I imagine it will be clearer when I actually see the locks and beads in person. The store in my area that carries Novobead is only 23 miles away but I will not be able to go for a look see , for a couple weeks, can’t wait ..especially excited to see the mini cz and the birth month charms.

    Victoria ,

Are the mini cz’s solid color or wrapped core ? I am hoping solid color, not a fan of the color core.I just got the Troll Orange steel in the mail its pretty but more wrapped core than solid Orange with the steel flecks

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Angela,

My apologies for the explanation – I think rainey is correct and really it’s a clasp that needs to be handled to understand. You can see the video that Novobeads made here though:-

The mini CZs are solid colour. They opted for working with cubic zirconia as opposed to glass because of it’s similar properties to diamond – it’s highly reflective and super durable. I finished writing the review on the mini CZs last night. I haven’t scheduled it yet but it should be out within the next 5 days 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

    • rainey

It is an ingenious thing but hard to describe — and probably harder to envision — because the mechanism is so unconventional. I repeat that you will be fortunate to get to see it in person for yourself, Angela. Then all will be clear because it’s not complicated. Only very different.

For everyone else, I hope the video makes it more clear.

There is a hook on one end and a set of teeth under the 2 design plates that pinches and holds the large round jump ring — making it easier to fasten around your wrist than any other clasp I’ve experienced. There’s also a strong spring that makes it all maintain the tension that keeps it secure.

Meanwhile, they are comfortable to wear and very very secure. I’ve used a Nautilus clasp for about a year and recently added the Blossom lock. I’m crazy about them. Of course, I have TB and RedBaliFrog locks I like very much too. But I DO love how these Novo clasps become a part of the bracelet design without the awkward voids where they hook on.

I am hoping they will design a clasp for Christmas bracelets and a bat lock for Halloween.

      • Jennifer

A bat! A bat! What a great idea Rainey!!

      • endangeredtrolls

Rainey you explained it far better than I did but I do share your enthusiasm for the concept. It gives a very different look to the bracelet I feel 🙂 I love the look of the Nautilus Clasp and this will compliment the Trollbeads spring collection perfectly!

I’d love to see them release holiday themed clasps, what a fabulous idea! And I’m with Jennifer, the idea of a bat lock makes me ridiculously excited!! 😀

Always a pleasure to read your insightful comments Rainey – Thank you so much for taking the time to share them with us 🙂

        Kind Regards
        Victoria

        • rainey

I don’t think I did any better at all. Really! The fact is that it’s so new and innovative that I don’t know who could describe it lucidly when restricted to words. The video you added will make whatever either of us had to offer much more clear.

Meanwhile, you provide a valuable service to all of us who love this stuff too much to be limited to just one company and one approach! ;>

And, PS: I wonder if others wrote to Novo and let them know we were interested in holiday locks if they’d give it serious consideration. I know I’ve suggested the bat and the holly bough but I’ve never had any response from them.

          • Jennifer

As a matter of fact, Rainey, I did send them a message this morning! 🙂

          • endangeredtrolls

Aw thank you for your kind words Rainey 🙂

I think it’s nice to see what’s going on in other brands. For a long time I was a Trollbeads purist but looking back, I’m not really sure why… For me it’s a little like saying that I will only wear one brand of clothes together. Now I take the opinion that if I like something, I will wear it. That said, I’m also a firm believer in personal preference and have nothing against the ladies or gents that keep their bracelets dedicated to the one brand.

Competition is good for the brands – it keeps them striving to produce the highest quality of new designs that they can.

The idea of a bat lock makes me so ridiculously excited 😀 I’d love to see them run with this idea 😀 I’ll certainly mention it next time I speak to them 😀

            Kind Regards
            Victoria

    Victoria,
By the way love the nail polish.. who is it by and color ?

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Angela 🙂

It’s the Christmas manicure featured here:- http://et2.wpengine.com/opi-skyfall-christmas/ – which is why it was looking a little worse for wear 🙁 It had managed quite a few days though which is a feat with my hands.

It’s three different shades, all OPI, a base of OPI’s Danke Shiny Red with some names then having Gettin’ Miss Piggy With It over the top (from Christmas 2011 Muppets collection) and others having the limited edition Man with the Golden Gun from the Skyfall release 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

  11. Angela

    Victoria,
Thanks for the video on the Novobead lock.Does it feel secure as it seems so easy to operate?
As for the nail polish…So I need to get the 3 colors and apply in the order you mentioned. I tried OPI’s polished in the past and had a great problem with them staining my nails even though had a base coat.Hopefully that problem won’t re-occur.I wonder if the problem was because I was using a non OPI base .

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Angela,

The lock feels very secure to me and I’ve been wearing it on and off for around a month now with no problems 🙂

Onto the nail varnish – i looove nail varnish 😉

I went with two initial coats of OPI Danke Shiny Red. The specific shade was from their Germany collection that came out early fall so it should still be easy to find. You’ll need a couple of coats to get a decent coverage. From there I alternated the nails between a glitter finish and the gold fleck finish.

The gold flecks came from Man with a Golden Gun which was a limited edition polish from the OPI Skyfall (winter / holiday collection.) This is proving a bit tougher to find now – indeed I had a tough time locating one but it’s so worth it and absolutely lovely. For the glitter nails it was OPI Gettin’ Miss Piggy With It which is a red glitter from the Muppets Holiday release for 2011. This might also be a little harder to find as OPI don’t continue production of their shades. But you know.. you’d be able to recreate it with any red polish and any red glitter polish. It’s primarily the gold flecked varnish that might be tough to replace. Beware that the glitter varnishes are a pain to remove if you use a couple of coats. Generally I soak a cotton wool ball in polish remover and literally press it onto my nail for a couple of minutes. (Actually, I frequently sit with ten balls soaked in remover pressed to each finger while I watch tv.. otherwise you find yourself scrubbing at them.)

As for the nail staining.. I have this a little and not specifically with OPI. Base coat helps but I don’t think it ELIMINATES the issue. That said.. at the moment my nails are stained by iodine (horsey has an owy) so I’d rather them get stained red than that 🙁 It makes me look like I’m smoking 60 a day 🙁

Hope that helps! I’m doing more nail articles soon since lots of you ladies seem to be liking them!!! <3

      • Susan

I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with this lock coming undone? I have had it 6 days, and twice the bracelet has fallen off! The least pressure on the leaf and it’s opening up enough for the ring to come off the clasp. I put a safety chain on it after the first time, but I don’t like this happening.
        Thanks!

        • endangeredtrolls

          Hi Susan,

I’ve never had problems with this lock and I think you should return it to Novobeads! My lock actually requires quite a lot of pressure to press it open – which is how I think it should be! I’d suspect there’s something not quite right with the spring mechanism inside.

Please contact them and explain the situation.

          Kind Regards
          Victoria

        • rainey

I completely agree with Victoria. I have had 2 Novo locks (tho neither is the one you’ve got) for at least a couple years and use them all the time. I have never had anything but a sense of complete security about either of them. And once I put a bracelet on, I don’t take it off until I put another one on. I garden in them, sleep in them, work out at the gym in them (but I don’t subject them to the chlorine of the pool).

I’ll repeat what she said in that it takes a very conscious squeeze to open the lock sufficiently to admit the jump ring and in that there should be real tension you can feel on that spring.

I hope Novobeads takes good care of you.

I would also add that I always use a safety chain in any event ’cause I had a TB lock fail and lost 2 beads. It was in my own kitchen but in the years since I still have never had them turn up. So, if the beads are worth collecting or even choosing or you’re not going to be able to let go of a loss like me, it seems worthwhile to have some backup system in place.

  12. Debbie

Thanks for a great review Victoria, and for showing the clasp with the beads nestled up to it!

The chain looks nice as well, and I like that it’s all compatible with Trollbeads and Redbalifrog chains.

I would love one of these claps, and I think that if we don’t get a European / UK distributor soon I will relunctantly bite the bullet and order one via the US.

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Debbie 🙂

I have been putting out the word in regards to a Novobeads EU retailer but no good news yet I’m afraid 🙁 Perlen seem to be picking up Ohm Beads and while they might be willing to consider a second brand at a later date, I suspect they want to see how Ohm goes initially.

The clasps are really lovely and I’d say they are worth suffering the taxes for (and I’m actually difficult to convince on that score as I find ordering from the USA just a huge pain and generally refuse :P)

I hope the images were ok for you 🙂 I remember that you wanted to see it all tucked close together and did try to capture this 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

  13. Debbie

    Hi Victoria,

Thank you, the images were perfect in capturing exactly what I wanted to see. Thanks for remembering my request 🙂

    Hey, Victoria-

I wonder if you’d be interested in this new approach to beads that is made possible by the Novo clasp:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/75667634@N00/8440358746/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/75667634@N00/8439274463/

That’s a TB 5.5″ chain with a Novo clasp. The thing about the clasp is it is able to act as a stopper on the small eyelet end without leaving any extraneous mechanism revealed. And — as I know you’ll appreciate from being familiar with the Novo design — it’s completely secure!

Hope you’ll see this tagged on here so far back in your queue. I didn’t find any opportunity to contact you directly.

    Best regards!

    • endangeredtrolls

      rainey I LOVE this idea!

Actually I love it to the extent that if you don’t mind, I might dabble with this idea for a future article? I tried a couple of years ago to use a bracelet on a handbag but I just couldn’t get it to work – this NEVER crossed my mind when the Novobeads clasp arrived and it’s brilliant!

Thank you so much for sharing this 🙂

      Kind Regards

  15. Jayne Little

Does anyone know if the Novobeads maple leaf clasp will work with Trollbeads leather wrap bracelets? I’m new to this and don’t wear silver, but really like the casual leather look. None of the Trollbeads locks appeal to me.
Secondly, if this will work, do you know a retailer that will ship to Canada and who sells both Trollbeads and Novobeads? Shipping for everythinbg separately gets very costly very quickly.
Thanks for all the great information and pictures.
    Jayne

    • endangeredtrolls

      Hi Jayne,

      Welcome to my blog 🙂

Ok so I just went and tried this for you. I can’t get either side of the lock to fit over the larger part of the Trollbeads leather 🙁 (the actual punched leather holes http://trollbeads.com/en-US/catalog/USD/Bracelets%20and%20Necklaces/L5110-XX(ProductFamilies_USD).aspx) So I’m afraid this doesn’t work.

It’s possible that you could have a silver ring placed through the punched end of the leather. This would make the Novobeads clasp work and make the bracelet easier to use (even Trollbeads locks that fit the leather can be incredibly fiddly to fasten!) That should allow the Novobeads clasp to work but it would require you take the leather to a jeweller to have a ring fitted.

Novobeads of course have their own leather bracelets but they have lobster clasps fitted so you can’t use the separate clasp!

I’m not aware of any retailers that stock both. Trollbeads and Novobeads have an unpleasant history (court case involved) so many Trollbeads retailers are unwilling to stock the Novobeads brand I think.

Are you particularly keen on collecting Trollbeads? Or are you primarily looking for a leather bracelet? If you give me an idea of what you’re wanting I can try and make some suggestions maybe? 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

      • Jayne

Thank you both for the replies. I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and we have a Trollbeads retailer, but nothing for Novobeads.

I am really not sure what I want to do! I have been given a Michael Hill brown leather braided bracelet, with 1 Murano bead and a plain silver stopper. I didn’t think I would like it, but actually wear it a lot, stacked with my plain gold bangles. I prefer the Trollbeads glass that I’ve seen both on-line and in the shop, but can’t see myself wearing a full beaded bracelet. It’s just too busy for my style. What I wanted to do was get a black leather bracelet and use that when brown doesn’t work as I wear a lot of blue. i.e. with a periwinkle blue bead and maybe one more silver bead. I don’t want to get a Pandora or Chamilia leather bracelet because of the threading – prefer not to fiddle with that – and also like the flexibility of being able to choose beads from all brands. Michael Hill jewllers doesn’t have the black in stock and it’s a long wait, otherwise I would just do that. They have very classy bracelets and charms.
I wonder if it would work to buy a Novobeads leather bracelet and a maple leaf clasp, then remove the lobster clasp and use the maple leaf instead? I have in my head to make a really limited theme to encompass my birthplace (England), current home in Canada and my pets and acreage. i.e. oak leaf, maple leaf, cat and dog, something green for the land and trees and blue for the water?

I appreciate your help. You clearly have a passion for this hobby!

    • Tracy

Where are you in Canada, Jayne? There is suppose to be a retailer in Woodstock, Ontario so they might ship (although I know shipping within Canada can be even more expensive than getting something shipped from outside Canada!)

      • Jayne

Thank you Tracy. Unfortunately the Novobeads.com site store finder does not work unless you enter a town and province, so I suppose I could take a stab a making some guesses. The Woodstock one does not have a website 🙁
Looks like there might be one in Edmonton and one in Calgary…that’s as far as I’ve got…neither of those have websites either.

    • rainey

Hi Jayne- I’m glad Victoria tried it out for you. I was going to say a very qualified yes and suggest that you slightly enlarge the hole in the TB leather and then have someone help you thread the Novo clasp “tooth” into the hole. But I much prefer Victoria’s suggestion of putting a jump ring through the hole and catch that in the clasp. Can I suggest, tho, that you make that a small jump ring to hold a larger one in the same attitude as the clasp opening? And I’d have a jeweler do it and solder the rings permanently closed to protect the security of your bracelet and beads.

OTOH, having the lobster clasp removed from a braided leather and appropriate jump rings added is also a great idea. I like the look of braided leather very much and the single wrap means fewer beads with more impact.

If shipping from outside Canada is cheaper I believe Novo will ship from their own website.

      • rainey

PS Don’t forget to order one of their CZs! You’ll be amazed at how lively and beautiful they are and that bling would be a wonderful counterpoint to leather.

        • endangeredtrolls

Oh and I totally support this statement! The Novobeads CZs and mini CZs are some of the nicest beads I’ve seen in quite a long time.

          • Jayne

Wow! I can’t believe how generous everyone is with their advice. What a great group of friendly people.
i found this one on-line, but have no idea about the quality: http://www.biagistore.com/servlet/the-2657/Authentic-Zable-Starter-Bead/Detail.
Persona (available at my local People’s Jewellers) also makes almost what I am looking for:

I prefer braided leather, but it seems that my options are severely limited.
I know that I would not wear a solid silver bracelet – all my jewellery is yellow gold or antique rose gold – especially since I won’t be filling it up. I do agree however that the redbalifrog chain is very pretty. Maybe I could get it plated in rose gold????? I intend to only wear 3 beads max. at any one time – more of a rustic look than a dressy, shiny look.
Aargard makes the perfect bracelet, but it’s too thick to accommodate the standard beads:

Drat!! Considering I didn’t think I was into this costume jewellery thing, I seem to be expending far too much energy on it.

I think rainey summed it up – it’s possible but I think it will require some modification from a jeweller. It’s neither timely nor expensive for them to do this but certainly more of an annoyance than merely ordering something that works!

Quick update for inquiring minds. I just heard back from Novobeads – their leather braided necklace will work with the maple leaf clasp. All it will need is to remove the lobster clasp – the existing silver rings are large enough to accommodate the clasp!
Very exciting. Since you have all been so helpful, I thought this might be a useful contribution to your knowledge base.
    Cheers from snowy Saskatchewan!

Oh this is wonderful news! And nice to hear you got such a quick reply from Novobeads themselves 🙂 Thank you for keeping us all updated 🙂

Did you opt for the simple black? 🙂

      Kind Regards
      Victoria

Yes, basic black, plus the acorn charm. Still shopping……
        Thanks everyone.

I think the acorn is adorable. I haven’t gotten one yet but I really love it.

Oh I (like rainey) love the Acorn! 😀 I have a Novobeads Pine Cone that’s also stunning 🙂

          Keep us posted! 😀

          Kind Regards

            The pinecone is incomparable!
