Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventur’d piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.

(Romeo and Juliet prologue)

Love it or loathe it, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Annually I await those of the view that it’s nothing more than commercialised rubbish, promoted to pressure people into parting with money for cliched gifts. I’m a romantic person by nature so I wholly disagree with this view. Valentine’s Day is the celebration of something precious. Gifts to mark the occasion are lovely and usually greatly appreciated but they aren’t necessary. They’re the icing on the cake. It’s about showing someone special that you care. It’s interesting that those three little words are often uttered prematurely and then later, not enough. It’s easy to take people for granted when so often all they’re looking for is to feel loved, wanted and just appreciated.

Why mark Valentine’s Day with jewellery? It’s a very permanent keep sake. It helps create a memory and these are so precious. How many of us look over our collections and fondly remember who gifted us a certain charm and for what occasion? In photographing bracelets for this article, I was reminded that the charms and beads that mean the most to me are those that I’ve received from people I love. It’s the gift of something we can wear almost daily. A constant reminder of that special person, received on the most romantic of days.

Being absent a partner doesn’t mean you should avoid all things related to this holiday. Celebrate the other things you love and celebrate yourself!

If nothing else, Valentine’s is a day to rock out those pink bracelets. I’m a huge lover of pink anyway so I have an abundance of pink glass beads. If you want to be on trend for the new season, the best shade to colour block your pinks with is grey (and you’ll see a lot of pink-grey colour blocking over spring and summer.) The great thing about pink is that it can be toned down via the use of more neutral beads, ramped up by using more vibrant shades or given an entirely different, almost vampy edge by mixing them with blacks. It’s actually an incredibly versatile colour to work with.

Pink on Pink

And so the lion fell in love with the lamb..
What a stupid lamb…
What a sick, masochistic lion.

(Bella and Edward – Twilight by Stephanie Meyer)

For the ladies that love their pinks, why dilute with any other colour? Trollbeads have some absolutely fabulously vibrant pink beads and you can mix in silvers that either have special meaning to you or just express the romantic theme.

For the above bracelet I took the *Redbalifrog* Love is in the Air beads and mixed them with charms that mean a great deal to me. The *Redbalifrog* Christmas Wreath and Baby Dragon Frankie were both gifts from Amanda and a representation of a friendship that means so much to me now. The Pandora I Love You cube and silver heart with zirconia were two of the first charms I received on my very first bracelet; both of these came from my fiance. The Pandora Present charm came from my dad for Christmas many years ago. Finally the Snails in Love was one of the first silvers I purchased myself and represents my complete love of animals, regardless of their shape or size. (Snails are a particular favourite of mine. I’ve been known to spend time moving them from places with a high chance of squishing by passers by to safer zones.)

For the colour, Trollbeads were my go to for all these shots. Their glass and stone beads are just so vibrant and they boast a huge collection. This bracelet features limited edition Crazy Lace Agates from 2010, retired Pink Prisms, a current collection Pink Diamond and last spring’s pink agates.

The above image is a dedication to something else I love in my life (and as I said, let’s celebrate everything we cherish); fashion! I adore dangerously high heels and bold vibrant fabrics. In this case, they’re courtesy of Louis Vuitton and Christian Louboutin.

Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same;
And Linton’s is as different as a moonbeam from lightning;
Or frost from fire.

(Cathy on Heathcliffe – Wuthering Heights – Emily Brontë)

Ice Cream

Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her.
(Darcy on Elizabeth – Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen)

As I mentioned, pink is incredibly versatile in your ability to tone it up or down depending on what you mix it with. For those who want a more subtle nod to the traditional colour, mix in some neutrals and opt for paler, frostier pinks. Pastel shades are big news for spring and a particular fashion house referred to them as ice cream shades. What a fabulous description!

For the above picture I wanted a more fluid and consistent looking bracelet so I opted for the Trollbead’s limited edition Chinese silvers. These are the older silvers from 2009 but you could quite easily substitute the Hidden Zodiac silvers from January and still create the same look (and the latter are easier to find!)

Once again for the colours there was just no contest; Trollbeads! Here I kept the pink agates from last spring but mixed in paler shaded beads. The pink bead from the Flower Diamond kit is a perfectly delicate shade and adds just a hint of sparkle which is then continued with the inclusion of a pale Pink Desert bead. The retired Pink Prisms make a repeated appearance here. Neutral shades are introduced by way of buttery retired Brown Buds and this stretches to more golden colours with the Runes bead from the Danish world tour, Honey Dawn from autumn 2010 and heavenly Gold Silver trace. A unique armadillo in plum and golden shades ties the whole thing together.

“Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”

(Baby to Johnny – Dirty Dancing – 1987)

Love is… knowing that there are never enough pink nail varnishes in a girl’s life (about a quarter of mine are shown below!)

Did my heart love till now?
Forswear it, sight!
For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.

(Romeo on Juliet – Romeo and Juliet – William Shakespeare)

Vampish Style

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
(Bella on Edward – Twilight by Stephanie Meyer)

Girly girl or punkish diva? Why choose when you can be both in equal measure. Mix your pinks with blacks to create an entirely different image.

The silvers here were an easy choice again. *Redbalifrog* make a strong appearance both for their exquisite detailing, their undeniably appropriate theme for this article and the friendship that they represent. The Trollbead’s limited edition anniversary Flower bead makes an appearance both because my fiance bought it for me but also as it was purchased from another friend. The Trollbead’s Nightingale is a representation of my love for fairy stories and an ode to Hans Christian Andersen, who’s birth town we live just outside.

Once again I was reaching for the Trollbead’s glass for the colour. Limited edition Crazy Lace Agates were selected due to their incredible vibrancy. Sparkle and colour is supplied by the Pink and Black diamond beads as well as the addition of the black Flower Diamond bead from last year. A retired Donna acknowledges my never ending love of fashion. Two unique beads, a cherry armadillo (for my love of ‘dillos) and a black grape bead add the final touches of colour.

Love is… including my fiance’s Victory silver bead. He wears a very simple black leather bracelet with a *Redbalifrog* Om Lock. It’s simple and it’s fabulously sexy on him. He only ever wears two beads at a time on his bracelet. The first is my retired Joyful. The second is usually his silver Victory bead. Last weekend he switched it out for a splash of colour and borrowed one of my Manga beads. He works away all week and as I was missing him terribly while taking these photographs, including his bead seemed the perfect solution.

Love is also… changing my nail colour to compliment holidays, seasons, moods and fashion.

My gift is my song and this one’s for you,
And you can tell everybody this is your song,
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done,
I hope you don’t mind,
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words,
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world

(Elton John – Your Song)

Simply Silvers

These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which as they kiss, consume.

(Friar Laurence to Romeo – Romeo and Juliet – William Shakespeare)

While certain colours are undoubtedly traditional for Valentine’s Day, no one says you can’t break the rules. Some ladies hate pink. Contrasting metallic shades are continuing their strong presence in the fashion world through this year. Mixing high polish silver with darker tarnished pieces or blackened rhodium plated pieces is the way forward for creating this look. Ditch the glass and let the silvers do the talking. Your collection probably already symbolises who you are a person and the things or people you love in your life.

Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind
(Helena – A Midsummer Night’s Dream – William Shakespeare)

Summary

Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs…
Well what’s wrong with that?
I’d like to know…
‘Cause here I go again!

(Satine and Christian – Moulin Rouge)

Whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day with your loved one or whether you’re celebrating the things you love in your life, I hope the above pictures have offered some inspiration as to how to wear the most obvious colour.

I love celebrating my femininity and fashion is the perfect playing field for that. Be it jewellery, clothes, nail varnishes, shoes or makeup, we can change so much about the image we present via the use of colour. Happy Valentines Day to you all!

So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? Thirty years from now? Fourty years from now? What’s it look like? If it’s with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that’s what you really wanted. But don’t you take the easy way out.”
