Bead Database Changes (Jewellery Box & Wishlists)

This charm bracelet blog brings a summary of the newest updates to my charm and bead database. It includes a guide to using the wishlist and jewellery box features.

Late last year I launched the first phase of the Endangered Trolls bead database. It’s a simple enough concept; catalogue beads and charms across all of the brands I work with. It’s searchable by various filters, including colours if you’re searching for a special glass bead. It’s still incomplete but since it’s launch I’ve made a lot of changes to the system. Some of these are simply the addition of new beads or additional data for those entries. Others are a little larger.

Bead Database Wishlist and Virtual Jewellery Box

The largest change is the implementation of of a virtual jewellery box and wishlist for my readers. These two features are designed to allow you to track your collection and wishlists. Though most official brand websites offer these features, it requires you registering for multiple accounts. Here you need just the one.

Here’s a step by step guide to using them.

Registering Your Account

You need to register an account here at Endangered Trolls to use the database features.

Logging In

Once registered you use the login page to gain access to the features. You can find the login page on the main menu at the top of the blog.

Accessing the Jewellery Box and Wishlist

Once logged in you’ll notice a small icon appears in the top right of the website. Clicking on this opens a small dropdown window with options to edit your profile or access either the jewellery box or wishlist.

Adding Beads to your Wishlist or Jewellery Box

A link to the database is in the main menu bar (on a desktop) or the drop down on mobile devices.

Once you open a bead, you’ll find information regarding it’s release date, retirement date (where applicable,) product code, stock images, live images, core size and links where you can directly order the bead. In the bottom left corner you’ll also find options to add a bead to your wishlist or your jewellery box.

Wishlist

Once you’ve accessed your wishlist via the instructions above (reminder in the image below,) it will open a new page.

Your wishlist will look much like the front page of the blog. Clicking on a bead will open it’s individual details. Clicking on the the “where to buy” button will open a list of links.

Jewellery Box

Your jewellery box will look much the same (but without the click to buy buttons of course.)

Small icons under all entries allow you to delete a bead or move it back to your wishlist (or from your wishlist to your jewellery box.)

Wishlists, jewellery boxes or individual beads can be shared on social media or via email by using the individual icons on each page.

Further Database Changes

As mentioned I’ve now added many more beads to the database though it’s still far from complete. Aside from data you can now see release date and retirement dates for each bead. The default way in which beads are displayed has been altered too. It should now show the most recent entries for the current year and then work backwards (which makes far more sense than it did before!) For example if you filter to show just Trollbeads, you’ll see the new Trollbeads Day 2016 Bead first, the Trollbeads Summer 2016 beads next, the Trollbeads Spacer Collection third and so on working back towards the start of the year.

Please note that Trollbeads seem to be in the process of changing many (all) of their product codes which is a massive annoyance. Keep this in mind when comparing data between their official page and mine (or indeed retailers!)

Database FAQ

I’ve received a lot of questions regarding the database but many have been duplicates. Here’s a couple of the most common.

1/ Why don’t you feature brand x?
If it’s a brand I already work with them please assume their beads will be eventually entered. Data entry takes a lot of time and I have to find that time while also maintaining the content for the blog. If it’s a brand I do not work with then I have no permission to use their images.

2/ What about linking to people selling old or rare beads?
The database has had to be monetised. I cannot do the coding required to build this myself so I’m working with a consultant. Like everyone else that consultant has to be paid for his time and the only way to ensure future development of the blog (new features,) is to ensure I earn money from it. With this in mind links are sponsored and I can’t simply add a link to your favourite retailer because they happen to have a retired bead in stock.

In regards to private sellers (such as Ebay links,) that is a little more complex. It would require that I search Ebay on a daily basis looking for rare beads. I then need to monitor those beads everyday to update when they have sold. It’s just not viable for me to do that amount of work for zero reward.

3/ I’d really like a bracelet builder!

Ultimately I want this too! Ideally I want everyone to be able to drag beads from the database onto a virtual bracelet, regardless of the brand, so you can plan your ideas in advance. Realistically it’s super hard to implement and requires both a lot of work and a lot of financial investment. This doesn’t mean it won’t happen. It’s my “end goal” for this whole system but I needed to launch a functional database to get new investors first.

Database Summary

Obviously right now my primary focus is entering data but I’m also really keen to have feedback from my readers about any aspect of the database. If you have any suggestions or features that will help you to organise your collection better, let me know in the comments. Equally if you encounter any bugs or issues, tell me those too (it really helps if you can let me know if you’re using the desktop or mobile version and perhaps your browser information.) Do you want additional filters? Is there more information you wish to see per bead? This is an absolutely mammoth project and there’s still a long way to go before it resembles what I had envisioned but I hope some of you are finding it useful! There are a couple of “bugs” I’m already aware of, like the fact that some materials are showing under the “colours” filter (like glass for example.)

Remember to head to the comments section with your suggestions or feedback.

Wow! This is so cool! I didn’t realize you had a database at all. I’ll definitely be spending time checking this out. Thanks!

…. having trouble navigating on mobile, and can’t find Ohmbeads Guan Yin. I will try again another time from a computer.

    • endangeredtrolls

That’s not you or navigation. That’s me not being fast enough to enter all the thousands of beads needed.

      xoxo

    …. or TB Dala Horse… maybe it’s me…

    • endangeredtrolls

No it’s not you. The data is very incomplete at this stage. Newest Trollbeads are in and then the oldest. I’m working on the bits in between πŸ™

      xoxo

Oh, well that’s ok then. I thought I was a latecomer to an established edifice. Carry on with your Sisiphyian endeavor!

This is a huge amount of work, very brave if you to take it on. πŸ™€
I have added a few beads to my jewellery box, only about 600 to go…
I am browsing on an iPhone, so some things are a bit fiddly, but that is always the case with this platform.
I do have a few questions or comments:
    1. If I have multiples of a bead, is there a way to record the actual number in my jewellery box?
    2. Is there a limit to the total number of items that can be added to the jewellery box?
    3. What level of security is there on the jewellery box? It wouldn’t be good if DH could get access 😦
    4. I tried to get a complete listing of all the gold Trollbeads, I left all the fields blank apart from brand and material, but only a small selection came up. Is this because you haven’t added them yet or numptiness on my part?

Once again, I admire your dedication and hard work that has gone into this project.

      Hi! πŸ™‚

      1) No there’s actually not but I like that idea. Adding it to the “to do” list πŸ˜‰
      2) No limit! Or there shouldn’t be… πŸ˜‰
      3) The contents of your jewellery box are attached to your login details. So it’s not public πŸ™‚
      4) No that’s not you, it’s missing data πŸ™

      xoxo

      • Sorrel

Thank you for the answers, I am sorry if I sounded like I was moaning! Letting a work in progress go live is always problematic πŸ™€ Though I guess with the constant programme of releases this is always going to be “in progress”

        • endangeredtrolls

          No you didn’t! πŸ™‚

I need to have any idea of what people want to be able to make the database better (and ultimately that’s good for me as WELL as the readers! :))

And things like being able to show you have multiple of a certain bead never occurred to me. So different perspectives are great πŸ˜€

As for missing data.. well that’s just my problem πŸ˜‰ There are literally thousands of beads still to enter. Fourty years of Trollbeads and I’ve barely scratched the surface of twenty years of Pandora… Ohm Beads release at such a staggering rate too that their back catalogue is crazy. I keep chipping away at it as frequently as I can. It’s actually quite therapeutic work in a way – it’s just difficult to get much time for it when I’m also writing for the blog twice a day πŸ˜€

          xoxo

          • Elizabeth (Lizzie)

Wish I could help! I enjoy data entry, and used to be quite good at it too. πŸ˜€ I keep hoping to get back to work soon.

It looks really good Victoria! I really appreciate all the work you put in. I can’t wait to add more beads to my jewellery box/ wishlist πŸ™‚

    • endangeredtrolls

Thank you <3 I'm adding beads whenever I have a spare fifteen minutes or so to throw at it but it's slooooow work.

      xoxo

  7. Liz

Can’t imagine how much time it has taken you so far to do this but it great to use, I have started on my jewellery box 😊

    • endangeredtrolls

I don’t even want to think about it πŸ˜‰ The worst part by far is grabbing and editing the images.. cropping them to size, adding the text, compressing them down and so on. That’s what is taking the real time rather than the actual data!

      xoxo

  8. Beth

It’s fabulous, Victoria! Now that I know how to log in, I’ve been playing with it off and on. I’ve been able to add a fair few beads to my jewelry box so far. What a huge amount of work you’ve already put into it! Thank you so very much! (In terms of thanking you in a way that will really help, is there a way to access your PayPal donation/subscription page in English? I can’t get it to work from the Danish link you provide. Thank you!)

    • endangeredtrolls

It’s really weird that I can’t get it to show in English and I have no idea why. I’ll have another play with it tomorrow and see if I can make it work πŸ˜‰

I’m pleased you like the database though. There’s still SO much to do to it but slowly and surely it’s starting to take shape πŸ™‚

      xoxo

  9. AK

Thank you so much for the immense hard work you’ve put into this! It’s very helpful to have all of the brands side by side and I’ve nosed around the database extensively, oohing and aahing at all of the beads.
I love that you provide the Rarity rating and was wondering how that is determined? Would it be possible to have a ‘sort by rarity’ or ‘view rarity ranges’ feature in the future? Curious old me is so intrigued about what the rarest beads are πŸ™‚
Another feature that might be useful is the ability to make little comments about the beads in one’s jewellery box/wishlist. Trollbeads’ lists have that ability and I found myself always using it to note down dates and occasions of when I purchased beads.
Sorry if I sound pushy and entitled! I’m very excited for the work that you’ve already poured into this mammoth project and it’s already become my go-to database!

I don’t know if you are aware of these, but two bugs that I’ve come across over the months are:
    1. If I select a filter of any kind, the first page of results displays fine, but from the 2nd page on the filters are unselected and the usual ‘all beads’ are displayed.
    2. If I select multiple designers, usually only the first one’s beads will display.
I am on the PC, running Windows 7 and using Google Chrome.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how very appreciated your hard work is and to thank you again for taking on this gigantic task! Good luck!

    • endangeredtrolls

Thank you so much for this! I’m going to pass all of this straight onto my developer.

In regards to the rarity; right now it’s being determined by the length of production according to the brand themselves but it’s far from perfect. I will note down the request for rarity filters πŸ™‚ I’ll also add the notes feature to my “list”

In regards to the bugs – this is so helpful thankyou.

I must admit you aren’t the first person to mention the issue with filtering beyond page two and I absolutely cannot reproduce it. So rather than try, I’ll pass it straight to my developer and see if he can track down the error πŸ˜‰

I am seeing the error with the designers though and I had no idea that was a problem.

I hope one day it will be amazing πŸ˜‰ There’s still a lot of work to do but slowly it’s shaping up to resemble what I want πŸ™‚ The next HUGE hurdle will be the bracelet designer πŸ˜‰

      xoxo

    • endangeredtrolls

Finally managed to reproduce the filter error by using Internet Explorer. Anyway sent it off to my developer and he’ll have fun tracking these down I’m sure πŸ™‚ Hopefully they won’t take TOO long to fix!

      xoxo
